This verse in the King James

King James wording
Among the bushes they brayed; under the nettles they were gathered together.

The Hebrew for “gathered together” carries the sense of being joined or attached, so the crowd’s closeness is set beneath nettles, in a harsh place.

People are gathered among scrub and beneath nettles while their voices are described as brays. The scene renders a human cry as an animal sound and shows people clustered in exposed, harsh surroundings.

יְסֻפָּחוּ

yəsuppāḥū

GROWS FROM

ס־פ־ח

To attach, join, or add by joining.

“huddle together” in this verse is yəsuppāḥū. The Hebrew verb behind “gathered together” carries the sense of being joined or attached. That gives the gathering a sharper texture: the people are joined beneath nettles, and the verse leaves the harshness of that place exposed.

ALSO GROWS

venispəḥu: Will be joined or attached.

וְנִסְפְּחוּ

In Isaiah 14:1, strangers “shall be joined” to the house of Jacob; the same root makes the attachment in Job’s image audible.

səfāḥēnî: Attach me or place me among.

סְפָחֵנִי

In 1 Samuel 2:36, a person asks to be attached to one of the priestly offices, showing the root’s use for joining someone to a group or place.

Scripture treats creature-sounds as signs of the conditions pressing on life.

Does the wild donkey bray over grass? Does the ox bellow over its fodder?
Job 6:5 · SDVThe bray is set beside the question of whether the wild ass has grass, linking a creature’s sound with its conditions.
For we know that the whole creation groans together and labors together in the pangs of birth until now.
Romans 8:22 · SDVCreation’s groaning gives the sound of distress to life pressed by pain.
For the LORD will have compassion on Jacob, will yet choose Israel, and cause them to rest upon their own ground. The sojourners will be twined onto them, and will be twined onto the house of Jacob.
Isaiah 14:1 · SDV

“Shall be joined” uses the same root, ⁨ס־פ־ח⁩, as “gathered together” in Job 30:7. Here the joining brings strangers into a people; beside Job’s group beneath nettles, the shared root shows how the place and terms of joining shape the image.
