This verse in the King James

King James wording
This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.

The Hebrew for “denied” also carries the sense of deceit, so misplaced reverence falsifies the world’s account of who is ultimate.

This verse treats reverence as allegiance: when visible powers receive the trust due to God above, denial is already at work. The Hebrew verb also carries the force of acting falsely, so the fracture is not only a spoken refusal but a false ordering of what is worthy.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie is that honoring created powers leaves one’s allegiance to their source untouched. The verse says that where reverence lands can itself deny God.

כִּחַשְׁתִּי

kichašti

GROWS FROM

כחש

kāḥaš

To deny, deceive, or act falsely.

⁨כִּחַשְׁתִּי⁩ means “I denied,” and its root also carries the sense of deception or feigned allegiance. With the preceding image of the sun and moon, the verse shows how reverence directed toward created powers can deny their source without a spoken declaration.

ALSO GROWS

wəḵaḥēš: Lying, falsehood (Hosea 4:2)

וְכַחֵשׁ

The same root names lying among acts that rupture trust, showing that denial of God has a social expression as well as an inward one.

yikkāḥăšū: They feign submission; “shall submit themselves” (Psalm 18:45)

יִכָּחֲשׁוּ

Here the root describes outward yielding that can conceal what is really held within, illuminating how allegiance can appear one way while being directed elsewhere.

When reverence settles on what is made, the heart’s allegiance denies the One who made it.

And lest you lift your eyes to the heavens, and see the sun, the moon, and the stars, all the host of the heavens, and be driven to bow down to them and serve them, which the LORD your God has portioned out to all the nations under the whole sky.
Deuteronomy 4:19 · SDVThe verse names the pull to worship the visible lights instead of the God who orders them.
Those who make them are like them, everyone who leans on them.
Psalm 115:8 · SDVTrust in what is made shapes the one who trusts, showing the cost of placing allegiance in created things.
who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and bowed down and served the creation beside the one who created, who is praised for the ages. Amen.
Romans 1:25 · SDVThe verse directly connects serving the creature over the Creator with exchanging truth for falsehood.
By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood touches blood.
Hosea 4:2 · SDV

Hosea’s “lying” uses the same root, ⁨כחש⁩ (kāḥaš), as Job’s “denied,” ⁨כִּחַשְׁתִּי⁩ (kichašti). The shared root ties denial of God to falsehood that spills outward into broken trust and life.
