This verse in the King James

King James wording
Yea, I attended unto you, and, behold, there was none of you that convinced Job, or that answered his words:

The friends’ attention to Job’s words does not mean they have answered them: none can make a case that convinces him.

Job’s words receive attention, yet none of his friends answers what he has said or makes a case that convinces him. The verse names a gap that remains recognizable now: listening and answering are not the same.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

If someone has listened carefully, then my words have been answered.

מוֹכִיחַ

mokhiach

GROWS FROM

יכח

To prove, reprove, or settle a matter through judgment.

“reproved” in this verse is mokhiach. The Hebrew word is a form meaning a reprover: someone who can establish a case against Job. The verse says no one among the friends has done so, or answered Job’s words.

ALSO GROWS

hokhiach: Reproved, demonstrated, or argued a case.

הוֹכִיחַ

This verb shows that the question is whether anyone has made a case that meets Job’s claim.

tokhechah: Reproof or correction.

תּוֹכֵחָה

This noun carries the same root into the act of correcting someone; here, the expected correction has not succeeded.

הִתְבּוֹנַנְתִּי

hitbonanti

GROWS FROM

בין

To discern, understand, or consider carefully.

“bent my ear” in this verse is hitbonanti. The verb behind “attended” carries the sense of considering or discerning, not merely being present. Even after that close attention, the friends have no answer to Job’s words.

ALSO GROWS

bin: To understand or discern.

בִּין

This basic verb makes the attentive, discerning quality of Elihu’s listening clearer.

binah: Understanding or insight.

בִּינָה

The related noun shows the kind of comprehension implied by attending closely to what Job says.

tevunah: Understanding or discernment.

תְּבוּנָה

This branch echoes the careful consideration Elihu describes before naming the friends’ failure to answer.

An answer meets a matter only after it has heard and engaged the words before it.

The one who returns a word before he hears it, folly and shame are his.
Proverbs 18:13 · SDVThis verse ties an answer to first hearing the matter, exposing how a reply can fail before it engages what was said.
Know this, my beloved brothers. Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to swell.
James 1:19 · SDVThe order of hearing before speaking reflects the attention that makes a real response possible.
Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to argue with God.
Job 13:3 · SDV

The Hebrew root ⁨יכח⁩, behind “convinced” in Job 32:12, appears again in Job’s desire to “reason” with God. His words remain part of a search for a hearing that can engage the case he is making.
