King James wording
King James Version
That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?THE KEY
Light and darkness have borders, routes, and a home, even where you cannot direct them.
THE MEANING
The question meets you at the edge of what looking can tell you: light and darkness have places and paths to their dwelling. To know those paths means discerning their order, not simply seeing their effects. Their order is real even when it lies beyond your reach to lead them there.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Seeing light or darkness does not mean you know its limits or can direct it home; observation is not mastery.
THE ROOT
תָבִין
tavin
GROWS FROM
בין
To discern between, distinguish, and understand.
The verb translated “know” is תָבִין (tavin, “you discern or understand”), from בין (b-y-n). Its word family also includes בֵּין (bein, “between”): here, knowing the paths means discerning their order, not merely noticing that they exist.
ALSO GROWS
bein: Between
בֵּין
The root links understanding with distinguishing one way or position from another.
binah: Understanding, discernment
בִּינָה
This related noun names the capacity the question asks about: seeing how the paths are ordered.
hevin: To understand, discern
הֵבִין
This related verb shows the same root at work as an act of understanding.
גְּבוּלוֹ
gevulo
GROWS FROM
גבל
To border, mark off, or set bounds.
“boundary” in this verse is gevulo. The word for “bound” belongs to a family that can name both a border and the act of setting one. Light and darkness are pictured within an ordered domain, with a limit and a way to its dwelling.
ALSO GROWS
gevul: Boundary, border, territory
גְּבוּל
This noun names the limit or domain that the verse asks whether you can reach.
higbalta: You set bounds
הִגְבַּלְתָּ
This related verb makes the act of marking a boundary explicit.
THE PATTERN
The world’s forces and territories have boundaries that precede human knowledge of them.
You set a boundary they may not cross; they do not return to cover the earth. When he sets for the sea its boundary, so the waters do not pass over his mouth; when he carves the foundations of the earth. And he made from one blood every nation of humankind to settle upon all the face of the earth, marking out their fitted seasons and setting the boundary stones of their dwelling.THE THREAD
Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.Job uses נְתִיבוֹת (netivot, “paths”), while Psalm 119:105 uses לִנְתִיבָתִי (linetivati, “to my path”), forms of the same Hebrew word. The paths that belong to the world’s light and darkness echo here as a path lit under your own feet.
