This verse in the King James

King James wording
The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.

What the KJV calls “frozen” is a Hebrew word for being caught: the deep’s face is seized into stillness, while the waters remain beneath it.

The waters disappear beneath a hard face, yet the deep remains there, held fast beneath the surface. The verse lets you see a solid-looking world as water concealed in a fixed state, its depth still present even when its motion is hidden.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A surface that looks sealed does not mean the depth beneath it is gone; the waters can be hidden and held fast.

יִתְלַכָּדוּ

yitlakadu

GROWS FROM

לכד

⁨לכד⁩ (l-k-d): to seize, capture, or entrap.

The Hebrew verb comes from the root for capture: the face of the deep is caught and held together. “Frozen” names the visible state; the root also reveals the deep as water seized into stillness.

ALSO GROWS

lakad: to seize or capture

לָכַד

The base verb makes the arrest inside “frozen” audible: the deep’s face is caught.

malkodet: a trap or snare

מִלְכֹּדֶת

This noun from the same root shows capture as a state of being held fast, like the waters under the ice.

יִתְחַבָּאוּ

yitḥabbāʾu

GROWS FROM

חבא

⁨חבא⁩ (ḥ-b-ʾ): to hide or conceal, especially oneself.

“hidden” in this verse is yitḥabbāʾu. The verb pictures the waters hiding themselves; they are out of sight, not gone. English “hid” can sound like a passive disappearance, while the Hebrew form keeps the waters present beneath what covers them.

ALSO GROWS

maḥbe: a hiding place

מַחְבֵּא

This noun from the same root gives concealment a location: what is hidden remains somewhere.

neḥba: hidden or concealed

נֶחְבָּא

This form shares the root’s consonants and echoes the waters’ hidden state beneath the hard surface.

Water may be held still or concealed beneath a surface, while its motion remains subject to forces beyond what the surface shows.

And the earth was unshaped and empty, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the breath of God was fluttering over the face of the waters.
Genesis 1:2 · SDVThe deep is present beneath darkness while the waters remain beneath the surface of what is seen.
He throws his ice like crumbs; who can stand before his cold? He sends out his word and melts them; he causes his breath to blow, and the waters flow.
Psalm 147:17-18 · SDVIce holds the waters in stillness, then they flow again as the cold gives way.
And waking, he rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Be silent. Be muzzled. And the wind wore itself out, and a great calm came.
Mark 4:39 · SDVThe sea’s motion falls into stillness at a word, revealing how quickly water’s visible state can change.
And the earth was unshaped and empty, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the breath of God was fluttering over the face of the waters.
Genesis 1:2 · SDV

Job and Genesis use the same Hebrew word for “the deep,” ⁨תְּהוֹם⁩ (tehom). Genesis shows the deep beneath darkness; Job shows its face caught in ice, with the waters still concealed there.
