This verse in the King James

King James wording
Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

The word arrives to Jonah, ⁨יוֹנָה⁩ (Yonah, “dove”), son of ⁨אֲמִתַּי⁩ (Amittai, “truthful”), before its message is disclosed.

The line places you at the moment of arrival: the word reaches its hearer before its content is disclosed. Its first movement is receiving an address that then speaks.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that you must generate truth from yourself: here, the address arrives before its saying.

דְּבַר

devar

GROWS FROM

ד־ב־ר

To speak or utter; speech and the matter spoken.

Davar can mean both a spoken word and a matter or affair, so what reaches Jonah is more than information: it is speech that brings a matter into view. English can make “word” sound like a detached message; Hebrew holds utterance and matter together.

ALSO GROWS

davar: Word; matter or affair.

דָּבָר

The noun itself holds both utterance and the matter it names, so the arriving word brings a matter into view.

dibber: He spoke; to speak.

דִּבֵּר

The same root names the act of speaking, holding the word as voiced address rather than only a written token.

וַיְהִי

wayehi

GROWS FROM

ה־י־ה

To be, become, or happen.

The Hebrew line opens with wayehi, “and it happened” or “and it was,” before naming the word as directed to Jonah. The KJV “came” captures the arrival, while the Hebrew form also frames the meeting as an event taking place.

ALSO GROWS

hayah: To be, become, or happen.

הָיָה

This root gives the opening its sense of an event taking place for Jonah.

yihyeh: Will be; will become.

יִהְיֶה

The same root can name what is unfolding into being, extending the verse’s sense of an arrival becoming present.

The word initiates an encounter by reaching a person and becoming speech before the hearer supplies its content.

Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
Jeremiah 1:4 · SDVThe word arrives to Jeremiah in the same direct pattern: encounter first, saying next.
He sends his word and heals them, and slips them free from their pits.
Psalm 107:20 · SDVThe word is sent into people’s lives and takes effect as healing and deliverance.
And the word became flesh and pitched a tent among us, and we beheld his weight, the weight as of the only-born from the Father, full of favor and truth.
John 1:14 · SDVThe Word’s arrival is expressed as presence among people, taking form in lived reality.
Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
Jeremiah 1:4 · SDV

The Hebrew repeats the same opening formula: ⁨וַיְהִי דְּבַר־יְהוָה⁩ (wayehi devar-YHWH, “and the word of the LORD happened or was”), addressed to a person and followed by speech. That shared ⁨דָּבָר⁩ (davar, “word” or “matter”) presents Jonah’s encounter as one instance of the word becoming an event for a hearer.
