This verse in the King James

King James wording
And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been hid, and laid great stones in the cave’s mouth, which remain until this very day.

The cave that once hid the living kings becomes the place their bodies are hidden after death.

You encounter victory at its most physical: executed men are taken down from trees, thrown into the cave that once hid them, and sealed behind great stones. “Until this very day” leaves the burial place as an enduring witness; sunset changes the scene from public exposure to enclosure, but not the reality of the deaths.

נֶחְבְּאוּ

neḥbeʾû

GROWS FROM

חבא

to hide or conceal oneself

“had been hid” in this verse is neḥbeʾû. The verse points to the very cave where the kings had hidden themselves; the hidden enemies become the hidden dead. The same root holds both moments together, turning their hiding place into their burial place.

ALSO GROWS

ḥābāʾ: to hide oneself

חָבָא

This verb names the act that brought the kings into the cave alive.

maḥbēʾ: a hiding place

מַחְבֵּא

This noun echoes the cave’s first role: a place of concealment that now receives the kings’ bodies.

וַיֹּרִידוּם

wayyōrîdûm

GROWS FROM

ירד

to go down or descend

“took them down” in this verse is wayyōrîdûm. The Hebrew uses a causative form: the bodies are actively brought down from the trees as the sun sets. The verb keeps the aftermath concrete, the executed men are physically removed and placed in the cave.

ALSO GROWS

yārad: to descend or go down

יָרַד

This is the root’s basic movement, made literal in the bodies’ descent from the trees.

hôrîd: to bring down or cause to descend

הוֹרִיד

This causative form describes the removal of the bodies from the trees.

A body is taken from exposure and given a bounded place in burial.

His corpse does not lodge on the tree through the night, but you surely bury him on that day, for the hanged one is a curse of God; so that your ground, which the LORD your God gives you as an inheritance, is not defiled.
Deuteronomy 21:23 · SDVThe verse sets a boundary on a body remaining on a tree and names burial as the next act.
And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah, facing Mamre, which is Hebron in the land of Canaan.
Genesis 23:19 · SDVSarah’s burial gives the dead a place in a cave, making enclosure part of the scene’s language of burial.
And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a tomb hewn from the rock, and rolled a stone toward the door of the tomb.
Mark 15:46 · SDVThe verse moves from taking a body down to placing it in a stone tomb and closing its entrance.
But these five kings fled, and hid themselves in a cave at Makkedah.
Joshua 10:16 · SDV

The phrase “had been hid” in verse 27 shares the root ⁨חבא⁩ (ḥ-b-ʾ, to hide) with the kings’ hiding in this verse. They return to the same cave, but what concealed them alive now contains their bodies.
