This verse in the King James

King James wording
And when all these kings were met together, they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel.

The kings’ meeting is not peaceful unity: the Hebrew verb carries the sense of an appointed gathering, and its purpose here is war.

Power gathers around one shared intention: the kings converge, camp beside Merom’s waters, and prepare to fight Israel. Their coordination makes the threat collective, but its purpose remains war.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A large coalition does not make its purpose right; agreement can gather around violence.

וַיִּוָּעֲדוּ

wayyiwwaʿadu

GROWS FROM

יעד

To appoint, designate, or meet by arrangement.

“gathered together” in this verse is wayyiwwaʿadu. English “met together” can sound incidental, but ⁨יעד⁩ (yaʿad, to appoint or meet) carries the sense of a convened meeting. The same root appears when God says “I will meet with thee” at the mercy seat; the root names convergence, while the purpose here is battle.

ALSO GROWS

yaʿad: To appoint, designate, or set a meeting.

יָעַד

The kings’ convergence is a coordinated gathering, not merely a chance encounter.

moʿed: An appointed time, meeting, or assembly.

מוֹעֵד

This branch makes the shared root’s sense of a convened meeting audible beneath “met together.”

noʿad: To meet or assemble; to be appointed to meet.

נוֹעַד

This form appears when God says, “I will meet with thee” (Exodus 25:22), showing that the root can describe very different purposes for gathering.

When rulers gather, their unity can become an instrument of opposition; the gathering itself does not decide what their cause serves.

So the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and camped before Gibeon, and fought against it.
Joshua 10:5 · SDVSeveral kings join their power in a single campaign of war.
The kings of the earth take their stand, and the rulers sit down together against the LORD and against his anointed one, saying,
Psalm 2:2 · SDVRulers coordinate their counsel around opposition.
The kings of the earth stood side by side, and the rulers gathered together against the LORD and against his Anointed One.
Acts 4:26 · SDVThe same pattern appears as rulers gather against the Lord and his anointed.
And there I meet with you, and I speak with you from above the covering, from between the two cherubim that are upon the ark of the witness, all that I command you to the children of Israel.
Exodus 25:22 · SDV

“Met together” in Joshua and “meet” in Exodus share the root ⁨יעד⁩ (yaʿad, appoint or meet). The same root describes a gathering bent on battle and a meeting at the mercy seat; the context reveals what fills each convergence.
