This verse in the King James

King James wording
And these are the countries which the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed for inheritance to them.

The Hebrew uses the same inheritance-root for Israel receiving the land and its leaders assigning it, showing possession and shared allotment as one movement.

You receive a place and a share through inheritance: what belongs to you is named and made concrete among others. The verse holds receiving and apportioning together, so belonging has both a gift and a shape. Joshua’s name, “YHWH delivers,” stands beside that portion as deliverance taking concrete form.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that what is yours must be seized alone to truly belong to you; here, inheritance takes shape through an allotment shared among a people.

נָחֲלוּ

nāḥălû

GROWS FROM

נחל

n-ḥ-l

To inherit or take possession.

“portioned out to them as inheritance” in this verse is nāḥălû. The Hebrew repeats this root for Israel’s receiving the land and the leaders’ apportioning it. English gives those actions different words, while Hebrew holds them together: the received inheritance becomes a shared, defined portion.

ALSO GROWS

nāḥal: To inherit or take possession.

נָחַל

This verb names receiving the land as something belonging to the people.

naḥalah: Inheritance, possession, or allotted portion.

נַחֲלָה

This noun shows the inheritance as a concrete share, not only a promise.

יְהוֹשֻׁעַ

Yehoshua

GROWS FROM

ישע

y-sh-ʿ

Deliver, bring into safety and spaciousness; Yehoshua means “YHWH delivers.”

Joshua’s name places deliverance beside the people’s received portion. The name echoes a movement from constriction toward spacious belonging, now given a tangible shape in the land.

ALSO GROWS

yeshuah: Deliverance.

יְשׁוּעָה

The same root names the deliverance that opens a way into a place of belonging.

moshia: Deliverer.

מוֹשִׁיעַ

This form names the one who brings deliverance, echoing Joshua’s name as the inheritance is apportioned.

Inheritance becomes belonging when a received portion is named within a relationship of shared life.

For the LORD's portion is his people; Jacob is the measuring cord of his inheritance.
Deuteronomy 32:9 · SDVThe relationship turns both ways: Israel receives an inheritance, and Israel itself is named as the LORD’s portion.
The cords fall to me in sweet places; indeed, my inheritance is beautiful.
Psalm 16:6 · SDVThe inheritance appears as a portion with boundaries, received as a place of belonging.
In him we also have been allotted an inheritance, marked out beforehand according to the aim of him who works all things according to the counsel of his own will.
Ephesians 1:11 · SDVThe inheritance is received within a larger purpose, carrying the pattern of belonging beyond a parcel of land.
For the LORD's portion is his people; Jacob is the measuring cord of his inheritance.
Deuteronomy 32:9 · SDV

Joshua describes the tribes receiving their allotted land; Deuteronomy uses the same inheritance word to call Israel the LORD’s own portion. The people receive a share, while the people themselves are also named as a share.
