This verse in the King James

King James wording
And Kinah, and Dimonah, and Adadah,

The list gives inheritance a shape: each place is named inside a larger whole.

Belonging is concrete here: what is held as a whole still has distinct places, and each one is named. Even when the larger inheritance is in view, no place disappears into the sum.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that only large or famous places matter is undone by the care this list gives to these three names.

קִינָה

Qînâ

GROWS FROM

קין

q-y-n

To chant a dirge; lament. The town name’s derivation is uncertain, though its form echoes the Hebrew word for a lament.

“Kinah” in this verse is Qînâ. If the echo is heard, a word for lament stands beside a place held within the inheritance, but the verse does not establish that this is the town’s name-nature. Dimonah (⁨דִּימוֹנָה⁩, Dimônāh; meaning uncertain) and Adadah (⁨עֲדָדָה⁩, ʿĂdādāh; meaning uncertain) also resist a secure root reading, so their meanings should not be invented.

ALSO GROWS

qînâ: A lament or dirge.

קִינָה

It shares the written form of Kinah and offers a possible sound-echo, without proving the place-name’s origin.

qîn: To chant a dirge.

קִין

The related verbal form makes lament an act of voicing, adding a possible resonance to the name while leaving its etymology open.

Joshua 15:20 names the whole inheritance, while this verse gives that whole individual locations. The frame turns three names into particular places included within a shared inheritance.
