This verse in the King James

King James wording
When they had made an end of dividing the land for inheritance by their coasts, the children of Israel gave an inheritance to Joshua the son of Nun among them:

The Hebrew repeats one root for apportioning the land and giving Joshua his inheritance, showing that the one who completes the distribution also receives a place within it.

The assigning of the land reaches its completion when Joshua receives an inheritance among the people. His place belongs within the shared inheritance: the one who has led them is included among those who receive.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The person who helps everyone else find their place has no place of their own.

נַחֲלָה

naḥalah

GROWS FROM

נחל

n-ḥ-l

To receive as an inheritance; in its causative form, to cause someone to inherit.

The root appears first in the phrase translated “dividing the land,” in the causative verb ⁨לְהַנְחִיל⁩ (lehanḥil), “to cause to inherit,” and returns in ⁨נַחֲלָה⁩ (naḥalah), “inheritance.” What English presents as dividing followed by receiving, Hebrew holds together as one movement: making people heirs, with Joshua included in the inheritance.

ALSO GROWS

lehanḥil: To cause someone to inherit; to apportion as an inheritance.

לְהַנְחִיל

This is the verb translated “dividing” in the verse, linking the land’s distribution directly to the inheritance given to Joshua.

naḥalah: Inheritance; an allotted possession or share.

נַחֲלָה

This noun names Joshua’s share and echoes the same root that described the completed apportionment.

An inheritance is a received share that locates someone within a larger belonging.

For the LORD's portion is his people; Jacob is the measuring cord of his inheritance.
Deuteronomy 32:9 · SDVThe same inheritance-root describes Israel as the LORD’s own received portion.
And the LORD spoke unto Aaron, You shall have no holding in their land, nor shall you have any portion among them. I am your portion and your holding among the children of Israel.
Numbers 18:20 · SDVHere belonging takes the form of a received share in the LORD rather than a portion of land.
In him we also have been allotted an inheritance, marked out beforehand according to the aim of him who works all things according to the counsel of his own will.
Ephesians 1:11 · SDVThe inheritance is again presented as something received within a larger purpose.
For the LORD's portion is his people; Jacob is the measuring cord of his inheritance.
Deuteronomy 32:9 · SDV

The Hebrew word ⁨נַחֲלָתוֹ⁩ (naḥalato), “his inheritance,” shares the ⁨נחל⁩ (n-ḥ-l) root with Joshua’s inheritance. Joshua receives a portion among the people; here the people themselves are described as the LORD’s portion.
