This verse in the King James

King James wording
Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.

Rahab’s name carries spaciousness, and she makes the wall that encloses her home into an exit by lowering the spies through it.

A wall can hold both enclosure and an opening; the way out here begins with a downward movement. Rahab’s house sits on the boundary, and its window becomes a passage through it. The scene speaks to the moment when escape seems to require finding an opening within the very edge that confines you.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It dissolves the assumption that a boundary can only trap, or that escape must come by climbing over it: here the opening is in the wall, and the route is downward.

וַתּוֹרִדֵם

vattoridem

GROWS FROM

ירד

y-r-d

to descend or go down

“lowered them” in this verse is vattoridem. The verb’s root is descent, while its form here makes Rahab the one who causes the men to descend. The verse presents the lowering as an intentional route through the wall.

ALSO GROWS

yarad: to descend, go down

יָרַד

This is the root movement beneath the scene: the spies reach safety by going downward.

horid: to bring or cause to descend

הוֹרִיד

This causative form highlights Rahab’s active role in making the downward passage possible.

רָחָב

Rachav

GROWS FROM

רחב

r-ḥ-b

to be wide or spacious

Rahab’s name comes from the root for becoming wide or spacious. The name’s meaning echoes the scene: she opens a way through the wall that encloses her home.

ALSO GROWS

rachav: to grow broad or spacious

רָחַב

This verb carries the spaciousness contained in Rahab’s name.

rechov: a broad public place or square

רְחֹב

This related word gives spaciousness a concrete form: an open place within a settled town.

A boundary becomes an escape route when someone is lowered through its opening.

So Michal lowered David through a window, and he went, and fled, and slipped away.
1 Samuel 19:12 · SDVAs in Joshua, a woman lowers someone through a window in the wall, turning an opening in a boundary into a route to safety.
Then the disciples took him by night, and lowered him down along the wall in a basket.
Acts 9:25 · SDVThe disciples use a wall opening and a controlled descent to carry Paul out of danger.
So Michal lowered David through a window, and he went, and fled, and slipped away.
1 Samuel 19:12 · SDV

The Hebrew verbs translated “let down” in Joshua and Samuel come from the same root for descent, in a form that means to cause someone to go down. The repeated root makes the lowering itself part of the escape mechanism.
