This verse in the King James

King James wording
For the LORD hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day.

The Hebrew verb for driving the nations out also means to take possession: their removal and your inheritance are one movement.

The LORD has driven out great and strong nations from before you, and no one has been able to stand against you to this day. Your present standing is bound to the removal of what stood in front of you.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Greatness and strength do not guarantee that an obstacle will remain standing before you.

הוֹרִישׁ

hôrîsh

GROWS FROM

ירשׁ

Y-R-Sh

To take possession or inherit; in the causative form, to dispossess or drive out.

“driven out” in this verse is hôrîsh. The same root describes both sides of the movement: one people is dispossessed, another takes possession. English separates these into opposing ideas, while the Hebrew holds clearing and inheriting together.

ALSO GROWS

yārash: Possess, take possession, inherit.

יָרַשׁ

This is the root’s basic form; it shows that what is driven out in the verse makes room for taking possession.

hôrîsh: Dispossess, drive out.

הוֹרִישׁ

This causative form names the LORD’s action here, carrying the same root as inheritance.

עָמַד

ʿāmad

GROWS FROM

עמד

ʿ-M-D

To stand, remain, or take one’s position.

The verse repeats the image of standing before someone: the nations are driven from before you, and no man can stand before you. The root makes the change concrete: opposition loses its place, while you remain standing.

ALSO GROWS

ʿāmad: Stand, remain, take a position.

עָמַד

This is the verb behind the verse’s claim that no one has been able to stand before you.

ʿōmēd: Standing; one who stands.

עֹמֵד

The participle keeps the root’s image of a person holding a position, the very position no opponent can maintain here.

Opposition that appears immovable can lose its place, while those it blocks remain standing.

And Moses said to the people, Do not fear, take your stand, and see the deliverance of the LORD, which he will do for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see them again for the ages.
Exodus 14:13 · SDVThe people face an overwhelming force, yet the force that stands before them will no longer hold its place.
You, with your hand, drove out the nations and planted them; you broke the peoples and sent them away.
Psalm 44:2 · SDVThe verse joins removal with planting, showing that making room for a people is part of establishing them.
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Romans 8:31 · SDVIt asks whether any opposition can hold its ground against those whom God stands for.
Then the LORD will drive out all these nations before you, and you will take hold of nations greater and mightier than you.
Deuteronomy 11:23 · SDV

The verse uses the same root, ⁨ירשׁ⁩ (y-r-sh), for driving the nations out and possessing what lies before you. Hebrew presents clearing and inheriting as one movement seen from two sides.
