This verse in the King James

King James wording
That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the people passed over right against Jericho.

The river’s motion is interrupted so the people can move: the water stands upstream, the downstream flow is cut off, and the people cross.

What seems to divide you need not remain an unbroken force: here the flow is held upstream and cut off downstream while the people cross. The passage opens through the boundary; the waters do not have to vanish completely.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that a barrier must disappear completely before you can pass it.

עָבְרוּ

ʿavru

GROWS FROM

ע־ב־ר

ʿ-b-r

To pass, cross, or go beyond.

“crossed over” in this verse is ʿavru. English “passed over” can sound like a simple change of location, but ⁨עבר⁩ names the crossing itself: movement from one side to the other. The same root appears in words for “beyond” and “passage,” so the verse’s central action is carried by a root that holds both crossing and the far side.

ALSO GROWS

ʿever: Beyond; the other side.

עֵבֶר

The people cross toward the far side; the root itself carries the sense of what lies across the boundary.

maʿavar: A passage or crossing.

מַעֲבָר

The river becomes a crossing place when its flow is interrupted, joining the people’s movement to the root’s sense of passage.

וַיַּעַמְדוּ

wayyaʿamdu

GROWS FROM

ע־מ־ד

ʿ-m-d

To stand, remain, or take a position.

“stood” in this verse is wayyaʿamdu. The waters do not merely slow down; they take a standing position. While the water stands, the people move, setting stillness and crossing beside each other in the same moment.

ALSO GROWS

ʿammud: A pillar or column.

עַמּוּד

A pillar stands upright; this branch gives shape to the image of water held in a standing mass.

maʿamad: A standing place or position.

מַעֲמָד

The waters hold their place while the people pass, as if the river’s position itself has changed.

אָדָם

Adam

GROWS FROM

א־ד־ם

ʾ-d-m

Human or ground-being, linked with ⁨אֲדָמָה⁩ (adamah), ground or soil.

The place-name Adam echoes ⁨אָדָם⁩, the ground-being, linked with ⁨אֲדָמָה⁩, the ground. The waters stand far from Adam while the people cross, placing the ground-bearing name beside a passage through water.

ALSO GROWS

Adam: Human; ground-being.

אָדָם

The city name echoes the human name, keeping the human-ground connection close to the crossing.

adamah: Ground; soil.

אֲדָמָה

The ground is the element associated with ⁨אָדָם⁩; here the waters are held back while the people pass across.

When waters that block passage are arrested or driven back, a way opens through them.

And the children of Israel came into the midst of the sea on the dry ground, and the waters were a wall to them, on their right hand and on their left.
Exodus 14:22 · SDVThe sea’s waters stand aside as the people pass through the place that had divided them.
The sea saw and fled; the Jordan turns backward.
Psalm 114:3 · SDVThe sea and Jordan both yield their ordinary course, showing water itself giving way.
Thus says the LORD, who sets a way in the sea, and a trodden path in the strong waters.
Isaiah 43:16 · SDVA path appears inside the waters, turning what blocks passage into the passage itself.
I am too small for all the faithful love and all the truth you have done to your servant. For with my staff I crossed over this Jordan, and now I have become two camps.
Genesis 32:10 · SDV

“Passed over” here and “passed over” in Joshua both come from ⁨עבר⁩ (ʿ-b-r), the root for crossing from one side to the other. Genesis names Jordan as a crossing already carried in one person’s words; Joshua shows the same root opening into the passage of a people.
