This verse in the King James

King James wording
Now all the people that came out were circumcised: but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not circumcised.

The wilderness-born are already out of Egypt, yet the verse places them on the road without the bodily mark carried by the generation that left.

You can be beyond one constriction and still find yourself on the road, with a mark of belonging not yet present. This verse holds departure and circumcision apart: the wilderness-born are out of Egypt, but they have not received the bodily covenant sign.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse unsettles the assumption that being brought out means every later generation already bears the same covenant sign.

מֻלִים

mulim

GROWS FROM

מול

m-w-l

Circumcise; cut away the foreskin.

The verse uses this root to describe the people who came out as circumcised, then repeats it in the negative for those born in the wilderness. The cut marks one generation and is absent in the next; elsewhere, the same verb turns inward toward the heart.

ALSO GROWS

mulim: Circumcised

מֻלִים

This form describes the people who came out of Egypt.

malu: They circumcised

מָלוּ

This verb appears in the final clause, negated to describe the wilderness-born.

בַּדֶּרֶךְ

baddéreḵ

GROWS FROM

דרך

d-r-k

To tread or step; to travel over a course.

“on the road” in this verse is baddéreḵ. The word translated “way” comes from a verb for treading. It places this generation on a road being walked out from Egypt: their origin is marked by passage.

ALSO GROWS

déreḵ: Way, road, course

דֶּרֶךְ

This is the word used for where the wilderness-born were born.

dāraḵ: To tread, step, march

דָּרַךְ

This related verb reveals the movement held inside the word for a road.

Scripture carries circumcision from a bodily covenant sign to the inward cutting of the heart.

And you shall cut the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be a mark of the covenant between me and you.
Genesis 17:11 · SDVCircumcision is named as a bodily sign of the covenant.
So cut the foreskin of your heart, and be no longer stiff-necked.
Deuteronomy 10:16 · SDVThe same circumcision language is turned toward the heart.
But the one in what is covered is a Jew, and the cutting around of the heart is in breath, not in the scratched letter, whose praise is not from humans but from God.
Romans 2:29 · SDVCircumcision is described as an inward reality of the heart.
So cut the foreskin of your heart, and be no longer stiff-necked.
Deuteronomy 10:16 · SDV

Joshua names a bodily cut present in one generation and absent in the next; Deuteronomy uses the same Hebrew verb for the foreskin of the heart. The shared root opens the image inward while keeping Joshua’s bodily mark in view.
