What Does Joshua 7:21 Mean?

When I saw among the plunder a good mantle from Shinar, and two hundred weights of silver, and a tongue of gold of fifty weights, then I desired them and took them. And look, they are hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver beneath it.

This verse in the King James

King James wording
When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.

What the eye names desirable moves into the hand, then gets buried beneath the very shelter meant to hide it.

Desire moves from seeing to taking, then into concealment; the objects remain beneath the tent, inside the space that shelters the self. The verse shows how what is hidden can stay close, carried into the center of one’s own life.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that burying something makes it gone dissolves here: what is hidden remains beneath the tent, still present within the shelter.

וָאֶחְמְדֵם

va’echmedem

GROWS FROM

חמד

desire; take pleasure in

“desired” in this verse is va’echmedem. The same root names both the act of desiring here and the quality of being desirable elsewhere. The word ties the eye’s valuation to the coveting that follows: what is seen as precious becomes what is taken.

ALSO GROWS

neḥmād: desirable, pleasing

נֶחְמָד

Genesis uses this same root for what appears desirable to the eyes, linking the perceived quality of the object to the desire it awakens.

ḥemdāh: a desirable or precious thing

חֶמְדָּה

This noun makes the connection explicit: the desired thing itself carries the language of desire.

טְמוּנִים

temunim

GROWS FROM

טמן

hide, conceal, bury

The root of “hid” also gives Hebrew a word for hidden treasure. The objects are buried in the earth at the tent’s center, turning concealment into a private store held within the sheltering place.

ALSO GROWS

ṭāmûn: hidden, concealed

טָמוּן

This form carries the same sense of being out of sight that describes the objects under the tent.

maṭmōn: hidden treasure, buried store

מַטְמוֹן

This related noun reveals the buried goods as a hidden store: what is concealed is also being kept as treasure.

What desire marks as desirable can move into taking, while what is hidden remains present and open to being revealed.

And the woman saw that the tree was good for eating, and that it was a craving for the eyes, and a tree to be desired for making one wise. And she took of its fruit and ate, and gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.
Genesis 3:6 · SDVSeeing what is desirable leads directly to taking, echoing the movement from coveting to taking in Joshua.
Then craving, when it has conceived, gives birth to falling short; and falling short, when it is full-grown, bears death.
James 1:15 · SDVDesire develops into an act and then into consequences, showing how what begins inwardly does not stay there.
For there is nothing covered that will not be uncovered, and nothing hidden that will not be known.
Luke 12:2 · SDVThe hidden thing remains within the reach of disclosure, even while it is covered.
And the woman saw that the tree was good for eating, and that it was a craving for the eyes, and a tree to be desired for making one wise. And she took of its fruit and ate, and gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.
Genesis 3:6 · SDV

“Desired” in Genesis and “coveted” in Joshua share the Hebrew root ⁨חמד⁩ (ḥ-m-d; ḥāmad), joining the judgment of desirability to the act of desiring. In both verses, seeing what draws the eye is followed by taking.
