What Does Judges 13:16 Mean?

And the messenger of the LORD said to Manoah, Though you hold me back, I will not eat of your bread. And if you will make a rising offering, you must raise it up to the LORD. For Manoah did not perceive that he was a messenger of the LORD.

This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the angel of the LORD said unto Manoah, Though thou detain me, I will not eat of thy bread: and if thou wilt offer a burnt offering, thou must offer it unto the LORD. For Manoah knew not that he was an angel of the LORD.

The verse sets holding against rising: Manoah tries to keep the messenger, while the offering is directed upward to the LORD.

You can be in a real encounter and still not recognize who stands before you. The messenger refuses bread, and any burnt offering rises to the LORD. Manoah’s unknowing sits inside the encounter rather than outside it.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The false belief is that the person you host must be the destination of what you offer. The messenger refuses the bread and directs Manoah’s offering to the LORD.

תַּעֲלֶנָּה

taʿalenna

GROWS FROM

עלה

go up, ascend, rise

“rising offering” in this verse is taʿalenna. The verb translated “offer it” shares its root with the noun translated “burnt offering.” The word carries the offering’s motion: it rises to the LORD instead of being consumed by the messenger.

ALSO GROWS

ʿōlāh: burnt offering; that which goes up

עֹלָה

The offering’s name shares the root of the verb Manoah is told to use.

ʿālāh: to go up, rise, ascend

עָלָה

This is the root verb; Judges 13:20 uses it for the flame going up and the messenger ascending.

תַּעְצְרֵנִי

taʿtserēnî

GROWS FROM

עצר

restrain, hold back, detain

“hold me back” in this verse is taʿtserēnî. The verse begins with Manoah’s attempt to hold the messenger, then turns to an offering that rises beyond him. Its movement is from restraint toward ascent: the encounter cannot be contained at Manoah’s table.

ALSO GROWS

ʿāṣūr: held back, restrained

עָצוּר

This form makes the root’s sense of being held in place explicit.

maʿaṣār: restraint, detention, confinement

מַעְצָר

The related noun gives the holding in Manoah’s invitation a sharper edge.

יָדַע

yādaʿ

GROWS FROM

ידע

know, perceive; knowing through encounter

“did not perceive” in this verse is yādaʿ. Manoah hears the messenger speak, yet does not know who stands before him. This root holds recognition as more than proximity: a person can be present in an encounter before its meaning is perceived.

ALSO GROWS

daʿat: knowledge, understanding

דַּעַת

This noun carries the same root into what is known or understood.

yediʿah: knowledge, perception

יְדִיעָה

This related noun connects knowing with what becomes recognized.

When a messenger is mistaken for the destination, the encounter redirects attention to God.

And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, fell at his feet, and bowed down before him. But Peter raised him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.
Acts 10:25-26 · SDVPeter refuses the worship directed at him and makes clear that he is not its proper destination.
And I, John, am the one who sees and hears these things. And when I hear and see, I fall and bow down before the feet of the messenger who points these things out to me. And he says to me, See that you do not. I am a fellow servant of yours, and of your brothers the prophets, and of those who guard the words of this scroll. Bow down to God.
Revelation 22:8-9 · SDVThe messenger refuses John’s worship and directs it to God, just as Manoah’s offering is directed to the LORD.
And it came to be, when the flame rose from the altar toward the heavens, that the messenger of the LORD rose up in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife watched it, and fell on their faces to the ground.
Judges 13:20 · SDV

The offering word ⁨עֹלָה⁩ (ʿōlāh, “burnt offering”) and the verb ⁨עָלָה⁩ (ʿālāh, “to ascend”) share a root. The next verse makes that rising visible: the flame goes up, and the messenger ascends in it.
