This verse in the King James

King James wording
And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up to Mizpeh to the LORD? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly.

At a place named for watching, absence itself comes into view: Jabesh-gilead is missing from the assembly.

The gathered whole makes its missing part visible: Jabesh-gilead is named because none of its people appear before the LORD. The verse leaves their reason unspoken while turning their absence into a question for the assembly.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that a whole community can go missing without being noticed dissolves here: the assembly names the absent town.

מִצְפָּה

Mitspeh

GROWS FROM

צפה

tsaphah

To look out, watch, or keep watch.

Mizpeh carries the name-sense of a lookout or watchpoint. Beside the verse’s “behold,” that name makes the missing town visible: the place of watching becomes the place where absence is seen.

ALSO GROWS

tsopheh: A watcher or watchman.

צֹפֶה

The watcher sees from a position of attention; the name gives this gathering a setting shaped by seeing.

tsaphah: To look out or watch.

צָפָה

The verb behind the place-name makes watching active, bringing what is missing into view.

הַקָּהָל

ha-qahal

GROWS FROM

קהל

qahal

To gather or assemble.

The assembly is the gathered body, made by the act of gathering. That shared root makes the omission concrete: one town’s absence can be counted against the visible whole.

ALSO GROWS

haqhel: Gather or assemble; a command form.

הַקְהֵל

The same root appears as an action in Deuteronomy 31:12, where the people are gathered together.

qehillah: Congregation or community.

קְהִלָּה

The related word names a community as a gathered body, making the absent town a gap within that whole.

A gathered community makes participation visible, and absence can mark a group as outside the shared whole.

Assemble the people, the men, the women, and the little ones, and the sojourner within your gates, so that they may hear and respond, and so that they may learn, and be struck with awe of the LORD your God, and guard to do all the words of this instruction;
Deuteronomy 31:12 · SDVThe people are gathered as a whole, with their presence joining them in hearing and learning.
When the day of Pentecost was fully filled, they were all together in one place.
Acts 2:1 · SDVThe gathered community is made visible by everyone being together in one place.
Not leaving behind the gathering of ourselves, as is the habit of some, but urging one another, and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
Hebrews 10:25 · SDVThe verse names assembling together as a shared practice whose absence can be noticed.
Assemble the people, the men, the women, and the little ones, and the sojourner within your gates, so that they may hear and respond, and so that they may learn, and be struck with awe of the LORD your God, and guard to do all the words of this instruction;
Deuteronomy 31:12 · SDV

Judges uses qahal for “assembly”; Deuteronomy uses the same root in haqhel, “gather!” The shared root makes the assembly an action that brings people into one visible body, so Jabesh-gilead’s absence can be noticed and named.
