This verse in the King James

King James wording
And they stood every man in his place round about the camp: and all the host ran, and cried, and fled.

Gideon’s men hold their places while the whole camp becomes a moving, shouting flight.

You see two movements at once: each man holds his place around the camp, while the whole camp runs, shouts, and flees. The verse gives you a living image of fear becoming collective motion; the camp’s size does not keep it from breaking into flight.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that a large group is secure simply because it is large gives way: the whole camp can scatter at once.

מַחֲנֶה

maḥaneh

GROWS FROM

חנה

ḥ-n-h

To encamp, pitch camp, or settle into a camp.

The Hebrew word behind “host” is ⁨מַחֲנֶה⁩ (maḥaneh), “camp.” The whole encamped body becomes the subject of running: it is the organized camp itself that dissolves into motion.

ALSO GROWS

ḥānāh: To encamp or pitch camp.

חָנָה

This verb names the settled arrangement that the camp embodies; here that settled order breaks into flight.

maḥaneh: Camp, encampment; by extension, an army or host.

מַחֲנֶה

This is the word used for the whole group that runs, making the camp itself seem to move as one.

וַיַּעֲמְדוּ

wayyaʿamdū

GROWS FROM

עמד

ʿ-m-d

To stand, remain, or take a position.

“stood” in this verse is wayyaʿamdū. The verb carries the sense of holding a position, not merely being upright. Each man holds his place around the camp as the camp around him breaks into movement.

ALSO GROWS

ʿammūd: Pillar or column; something that stands upright.

עַמּוּד

The pillar gives the root’s standing a lasting, structural form; here the men hold their positions around the camp.

heʿemid: To cause to stand, set, or establish.

הֶעֱמִיד

This causative form brings out the idea of an established position, echoing each man standing in his place.

וַיָּרִיעוּ

wayyāriʿû

GROWS FROM

רוע

r-w-ʿ

To raise a loud shout, whether an alarm or a cry of acclaim.

“called out” in this verse is wayyāriʿû. This is a shout, not simply a quiet cry. The same root can describe alarm or acclaim, and here the shout belongs to a camp already running and fleeing.

ALSO GROWS

teruʿah: A shout, alarm, or trumpet blast.

תְּרוּעָה

This noun makes the sound of the root audible: a public, forceful cry that can signal alarm.

hēriʿa: To shout aloud or raise a cry.

הֵרִיעַ

This related verb keeps the emphasis on loud collective sound rather than a private lament.

When fear becomes shared, a whole group can move into flight together.

And the record-keepers shall speak yet again to the people, and they shall say, Who is the man who is fearful and soft of heart? Let him go and turn back to his house, lest the hearts of his brothers melt like his own.
Deuteronomy 20:8 · SDVThe verse names fear as something that can spread from one person into the hearts of the group.
So they rose and fled in the twilight, and they left their tents, their horses, and their donkeys, the camp just as it was, and they fled for their living souls.
2 Kings 7:7 · SDVThe whole camp abandons its place and possessions as fear carries it into flight.
And they all let go of him and fled.
Mark 14:50 · SDVThe group moves together from abandonment to flight.
So the people shouted when the priests blew the trumpets, and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell beneath itself, so that the people climbed up into the city, every man straight ahead of his face, and they seized the city.
Joshua 6:20 · SDV

The verb translated “cried” shares the root ⁨רוע⁩ (r-w-ʿ) with the repeated “shouted” in Joshua. In Judges, the shout accompanies a camp’s flight; at Jericho, a shout accompanies the wall’s collapse.
