What Does 1 Samuel 6:18 Mean in the King James?
And the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fenced cities, and of country villages, even unto the great stone of Abel, whereon they set down the ark of the LORD: which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua, the Beth-shemite.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The ark is not merely placed on the stone: the Hebrew says it is brought to rest there, while the stone remains.
THE MEANING
Every city and village enters the count; the damage is not reduced to a faceless total. The ark is brought to rest on the stone, and the stone remains as witness. The passage holds exact accounting beside a place of rest.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that widespread damage becomes impossible to name: the count still reaches each city and village, and a witness remains where the ark comes to rest.
THE ROOT
הִנִּיחוּ
hinniḥu
GROWS FROM
נוּחַ
nuach
To rest, settle, or come to rest.
“set down” in this verse is hinniḥu. The Hebrew verb carries more than placing something somewhere: it means causing it to come to rest. The ark finds a resting place on the stone, and that place remains part of the account.
ALSO GROWS
vattanaḥ: And it rested.
וַתָּנַח
Genesis uses this form for the ark coming to rest on the mountains of Ararat, echoing the settling of an ark here.
menuchah: Rest or resting place.
מְנוּחָה
This branch brings out the stone’s role as a resting place for the ark.
מִסְפַּר
mispar
GROWS FROM
סָפַר
safar
To count, recount, or tell.
The word for number belongs to a family that also carries the senses of recounting and recording. The list keeps the reach of the harm visible: each city and village enters the account.
ALSO GROWS
safar: To count or recount.
סָפַר
The golden mice are counted against the cities, making the scale of the offering precise.
sefer: Book or record.
סֵפֶר
This branch links counting with keeping an account; the verse preserves the places included in the count.
THE PATTERN
A stone turns sacred presence into a place or sign that can be seen and remembered.
And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.THE THREAD
And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat. Here, הִנִּיחוּ (hinniḥu, they caused to rest) comes from נוּחַ (nuach, to rest or settle), the same root rendered “rested” in Genesis. There the ark settles on the mountains; here the ark is brought to rest on a stone.
