This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The command goes beyond freeing captives: its Hebrew says to make them return to the kinship their capture tore apart.

The command to hear reaches its meaning in what follows: return the people taken from their own kin. The captors are under the fierce anger of the LORD; the verse does not soften the consequence. Here release restores the bond of kinship that capture severed.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie this undoes is that a captor’s victory makes a captive theirs to keep; the verse names their keeping as the reason the LORD’s anger is upon them.

הָשִׁיבוּ

hashivu

GROWS FROM

שוב

shuv

to turn, return; in this form, to cause to return or restore

“deliver ... again” in this verse is hashivu. The Hebrew verb is causative: make the captives return. Release here is restoration of a severed belonging, not only escape from a captor.

ALSO GROWS

shuv: to return, turn back

שׁוּב

The root verb makes the verse’s movement a return, not simply a departure.

teshuvah: return, turning

תְּשׁוּבָה

This branch carries the same root consonants and shows return as a change of direction toward what was left behind.

שְׁמָעוּנִי

shemaʿuni

GROWS FROM

שמע

shamaʿ

to hear, listen

“Hear me” stands directly before “return the captives”; in this verse, hearing reaches completion in the response that follows. The root gathers listening and response into one movement.

ALSO GROWS

shamaʿ: to hear, listen

שָׁמַע

This is the verb’s basic action, which the following command makes concrete.

shemuʿah: report, news; what is heard

שְׁמוּעָה

The same root connects hearing with what enters a person through a report or message.

Release is completed when the person taken is restored to freedom and belonging.

And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family.
Leviticus 25:10 · KJVLiberty includes returning each person to family and home, joining release with restored belonging.
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
Luke 4:18 · KJVDeliverance names captives and the bruised as people released from what holds them.
That then the LORD thy God will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath scattered thee.
Deuteronomy 30:3 · KJV

The root ⁨שוב⁩ (shuv, return) appears in both: here the captors must cause a return, while Deuteronomy speaks of the LORD returning and gathering the scattered. The shared root binds release to restoration, as people are brought back into relationship.
