What Does 2 Samuel 17:14 Mean in the King James?

And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the LORD had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom.

This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The counsel that appears to win by consensus is the very means by which harm reaches Absalom.

The assembly names Hushai’s counsel better, while the LORD directs that choice to break Ahithophel’s counsel and bring harm upon Absalom. Group agreement names what seems strongest in the moment; it does not guarantee that the choice serves the one who accepts it.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that a decision’s apparent superiority, even when a whole group agrees, guarantees that it will serve the people choosing it.

לְהָפֵר

lehafer

GROWS FROM

פרר

parar

To break, frustrate, or make ineffective.

“defeat” in this verse is lehafer. The Hebrew describes the counsel’s force being broken, not simply its losing a comparison. The same root can describe breaking a covenant; here, Ahithophel’s advice is rendered powerless within the purpose that brings harm upon Absalom.

ALSO GROWS

hefer berit: To break or annul a covenant.

הֵפֵר בְּרִית

The root can undo something established; here, it undoes the practical force of counsel.

hefer etsah: To make advice or a plan ineffective.

הֵפֵר עֵצָה

This is the same breaking action applied directly to Ahithophel’s counsel.

רָעָה

raʿah

GROWS FROM

רעע

raʿaʿ

To be bad, injure, or bring harm and calamity.

“evil” in this verse is raʿah. Here raʿah carries the concrete sense of calamity and harm: the verse says that harm comes upon Absalom by the LORD’s intent. The word keeps the consequence in view rather than leaving it as an abstract reversal.

ALSO GROWS

raʿ: That which is bad or harmful.

רַע

It shares the root’s basic sense of what brings harm.

raʿah: Trouble or adversity that befalls someone.

רָעָה

This is the harm the verse says is brought upon Absalom.

Human decisions can become the means of outcomes their makers do not intend while a larger purpose proceeds through them.

The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect.
Psalm 33:10 · KJVThe verse shows human counsel and plans being brought to nothing under the LORD’s purpose.
There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.
Proverbs 19:21 · KJVMany human plans coexist with a purpose that does not depend on their agreement.
Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:
Acts 2:23 · KJVThe verse places human action and God’s determined counsel in the same account, without softening the violence of the act.
But if thou return to the city, and say unto Absalom, I will be thy servant, O king; as I have been thy father’s servant hitherto, so will I now also be thy servant: then mayest thou for me defeat the counsel of Ahithophel.
2 Samuel 15:34 · KJV

David tells Hushai he may “defeat” Ahithophel’s counsel with the same Hebrew root used in this verse. Here, the narrator says the LORD has appointed that breaking, joining Hushai’s strategy and the divine purpose through one word.
