This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Here “assented” is not a quiet conclusion: the verb pictures people joining the accusation and giving it a chorus.

A claim gains public force when others join in saying it is so. Agreement can make an accusation sound settled, yet it still leaves open whether the claim can be proved. The verse holds social weight and truth apart.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

If many people agree with an accusation, it must be true.

GROWS FROM

τίθημι

tithēmi

to put, set, or place

The verb translated “assented” is built on ⁨τίθημι⁩, with the senses of “together” and “upon” layered into it. It can describe joining in an attack, so the word carries the force of people adding themselves to an accusation, not merely reaching a private conclusion.

ALSO GROWS

epitithēmi: to lay upon, impose; also to attack

ἐπιτίθημι

This branch gives the assent a forceful edge: the speakers are joining in pressing a charge.

syntithēmi: to put together; to agree or consent

συντίθημι

This branch shows agreement as people coming together around a claim, rather than proof that the claim is true.

An accusation can gain force through agreement while still failing the test of truth.

He that is first in his own cause seemeth just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him.
Proverbs 18:17 · KJVThe first account can sound convincing until another voice examines it.
For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together.
Mark 14:56 · KJVMany voices make accusations, yet their testimony does not establish a coherent case.
And there came in two men, children of Belial, and sat before him: and the men of Belial witnessed against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did blaspheme God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died.
1 Kings 21:13 · KJVA public accusation backed by multiple witnesses can carry deadly force while remaining false.
Neither can they prove the things whereof they now accuse me.
Acts 24:13 · KJV

This line exposes the gap in the crowd’s assent: they say the charges are so, while the accused says they cannot prove them. Agreement is audible; proof is a different kind of weight.
