King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The king’s haste carries alarm within it: he rushes toward the den because the answer is still hidden there.
THE MEANING
Alarm sends you toward the place where the answer is hidden. The king rises at first light and hurries to the den, where the outcome is still unseen. His movement holds dread and concern together.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Haste does not always signal confidence or control; here it rises from alarm and moves toward an uncertain answer.
THE ROOT
בְּהִתְבְּהָלָה
bəhitbəhalāh
GROWS FROM
בהל
To be alarmed or disturbed; to hurry under alarm.
“in haste” in this verse is bəhitbəhalāh. The Aramaic word for haste grows from בהל, a root that also carries alarm and dismay. The king is not simply moving quickly; his urgency bears the agitation of someone rushing toward an answer he does not yet have.
ALSO GROWS
bāhal: To be alarmed, dismayed, or hurried.
בָּהַל
This branch shows how haste can carry disturbance within it, as it does in the king’s rush.
behalah: Alarm, sudden terror, or dismay.
בֶּהָלָה
This noun makes the emotional force behind the king’s quick movement visible.
nibhāl: Dismayed or alarmed.
נִבְהַל
This form links the verse’s haste with the unsettled state that can drive someone toward an uncertain answer.
THE PATTERN
Alarm often turns uncertainty into urgent movement toward the place where the outcome will be revealed.
And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city. And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid.THE THREAD
Then Arioch brought in Daniel before the king in haste, and said thus unto him, I have found a man of the captives of Judah, that will make known unto the king the interpretation. The same Aramaic root, בהל, marks Arioch’s haste in bringing Daniel before the king. Now the king hurries toward Daniel; across both verses, alarm drives a journey toward an answer Daniel alone can reveal.
