The Hebrew root for “flieth” also gives Hebrew a word for a flying creature, so this likeness reaches beyond shape to movement.

The verse names creatures on the ground and in the sky, spanning the visible forms of animal life. Its repeated “likeness” points to the limit of a fixed image: it can capture an outline, but not the living movement of what it depicts.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A visible creature-form can make the unseen fully present and graspable.

תָּעוּף

taʿuf

GROWS FROM

עוף

To fly or move through the air.

“flieth” in this verse is taʿuf. English separates the fowl from its flight. The Hebrew root ⁨עוף⁩ also forms ⁨עוֹף⁩, a word for a flying creature, keeping flight and creaturely life close together; the likeness named here concerns a living form in motion as well as its shape.

ALSO GROWS

ʿoph: Bird or flying creature.

עוֹף

This noun from the same root carries the idea of flight in the creature’s name, joining what English presents as separate.

yeʿofef: Flies or moves through the air.

יְעוֹפֵף

Genesis 1:20 uses this form for the movement of flying creatures, showing the root’s action in the sky.

A fixed image cannot contain the reality of the living or the unseen.

Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves; for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that the LORD spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire:
Deuteronomy 4:15 · KJVThe verse says no visible similitude was seen, setting a boundary against giving the unseen a creature’s fixed form.
To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him?
Isaiah 40:18 · KJVThe question exposes the limit of trying to contain God in a likeness.
Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.
Acts 17:29 · KJVThe verse rejects the idea that a made object can contain the reality of the divine.
Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves; for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that the LORD spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire:
Deuteronomy 4:15 · KJV

“Similitude” here and “likeness” in 4:17 translate the same Hebrew word, ⁨תְּמוּנָה⁩ (temunah), meaning form or likeness. The first verse names the absence of a visible form; this one names the creature-forms that cannot stand in for it.
