What Does Exodus 29:37 Mean in the King James?
Seven days thou shalt make an atonement for the altar, and sanctify it; and it shall be an altar most holy: whatsoever toucheth the altar shall be holy.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The altar’s covering does not end at the altar: after seven days, its set-apartness passes to whatever touches it.
THE MEANING
The altar is covered for seven days and set apart as most holy; whatever touches it becomes set apart too. Here, set-apartness extends through contact instead of remaining enclosed in one object.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the assumption that what is set apart remains sealed within itself: the verse says its status can pass through contact.
THE ROOT
תְּכַפֵּר
tekapper
GROWS FROM
כפר
Cover; cover over.
The word rendered “atonement” carries the root sense of covering. In this verse, the covering of the altar leads into a set-apartness that reaches whatever touches it.
ALSO GROWS
kippur: Covering; atonement.
כִּפּוּר
This familiar branch keeps the root’s covering sense audible beneath the verse’s language of atonement.
kopher: Pitch; a coating.
כֹּפֶר
The word for pitch used to coat the ark gives the root a concrete picture of covering a surface.
וְקִדַּשְׁתּוֹ
veqiddashto
GROWS FROM
קדש
Set apart; make sacred.
“sanctify” in this verse is veqiddashto. The same root names the act of setting the altar apart and its condition as most holy. The verse then uses that root again for what happens to whatever touches it: set-apartness reaches beyond its source.
ALSO GROWS
qadosh: Set apart; sacred.
קָדוֹשׁ
This is the adjective describing the altar’s resulting condition.
qodesh: Set-apartness; a sacred thing.
קֹדֶשׁ
The phrase “most holy” repeats this root to emphasize the altar’s status.
miqdash: Sanctuary; set-apart place.
מִקְדָּשׁ
This branch shows the root can name a place whose defining quality is being set apart.
THE PATTERN
Set-apartness can pass outward through contact with what has been set apart.
And thou shalt sanctify them, that they may be most holy: whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy. All the males among the children of Aaron shall eat of it. It shall be a statute for ever in your generations concerning the offerings of the LORD made by fire: every one that toucheth them shall be holy. For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.THE THREAD
All the males among the children of Aaron shall eat of it. It shall be a statute for ever in your generations concerning the offerings of the LORD made by fire: every one that toucheth them shall be holy.Leviticus uses the same Hebrew root for set-apartness and repeats the consequence of touching what is set apart. It shows the altar’s contact principle recurring with the offerings.
