What Does Exodus 7:11 Mean in the King James?
Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers: now the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments.

THE KEY
Pharaoh’s experts can reproduce the sign’s appearance, but imitation does not settle what power is at work.
THE MEANING
You may encounter an imitation that reproduces the visible form of a sign. The verse places that copied performance beside Moses’ sign, showing that likeness alone cannot tell you what lies beneath it.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A display that looks like a true sign must come from the same source.
THE ROOT
בְּלַהֲטֵיהֶם
bə-lahaṭêhem
GROWS FROM
ל־ה־ט
L-H-Ṭ
To blaze or flame; as a noun, a flame.
The Hebrew word rendered “enchantments” comes from a root that also names flame. The word carries an image of vivid, forceful display, while the verse leaves the source of that display in question.
ALSO GROWS
lahat: A flame or blazing fire.
לַהַט
The same root appears in the description of the flaming sword in Genesis 3:24, giving the magicians’ acts a striking, fiery shade.
vatelahatehu: A form of the verb “to set ablaze,” in Isaiah 42:25.
וַתְּלַהֲטֵהוּ
The verb branch shows the root in action: something that blazes can also kindle or consume.
מִצְרַיִם
Mitzrayim
GROWS FROM
צ־ר־ר
ṣ-r-r
To constrict or make narrow; צַר (tsar) means narrow or tight.
“Egypt” in this verse is Mitzrayim. Mitzrayim carries the image of “the two narrows” in the passage’s larger movement from constriction toward spaciousness. Here the imitation takes place inside Pharaoh’s constricted order; a reproduced sign is not itself release.
ALSO GROWS
tsar: Narrow, tight, or confined.
צַר
This root gives Egypt’s name its image of constriction.
Mitzrayim: The name associated with twofold constriction.
מִצְרַיִם
The magicians’ performance is staged within Pharaoh’s narrow order, where a show of power does not itself let anyone go.
THE PATTERN
A visible sign can be imitated, so its appearance alone does not establish its source or its reach.
For they cast down every man his rod, and they became serpents: but Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods. But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was.For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.THE THREAD
So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life. The Hebrew word rendered “enchantments” here and the word behind “flaming” in Genesis 3:24 share the root ל־ה־ט (L-H-Ṭ), meaning to blaze or flame. Genesis gives that root a literal flame, adding a vivid, forceful shade to the magicians’ display without settling its source.
