What Does Ezekiel 2:5 Mean in the King James?
And they, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear, (for they are a rebellious house,) yet shall know that there hath been a prophet among them.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
Refusal can silence the response, but it cannot erase the witness who has already stood among you.
THE MEANING
Your response does not control whether a message has met you. Even when you stop short of receiving it, its presence can remain undeniable: you know a witness has stood among you.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that refusing to hear makes the encounter disappear.
THE ROOT
וְיָדְעוּ
veyad'u
GROWS FROM
ידע
To know, recognize, or become acquainted through experience.
“know” in this verse is veyad'u. The verse does not say they finally accept the message; it says they recognize that a prophet has been among them. Yada points to knowing through encounter, so recognition remains possible even where a responsive hearing is refused.
ALSO GROWS
yada: To know or recognize.
יָדַע
This is the verb in the verse: they come to recognize the prophet’s presence.
da'at: Knowledge or understanding.
דַּעַת
This noun from the same root shows knowing as something the passage brings into awareness, not simply information received beforehand.
יִשְׁמְעוּ
yishme'u
GROWS FROM
שמע
To hear, listen, or heed.
“hear” in this verse is yishme'u. The verse places hearing beside refraining, making the response itself uncertain. Yet that uncertainty does not cancel what they will know: the witness remains present whether they heed it or not.
ALSO GROWS
shema: Hear and respond.
שְׁמַע
It shows that hearing can include a response, which the verse leaves open.
shemuah: A report or message that is heard.
שְׁמוּעָה
The word links hearing with the message carried to the listener, even when the listener does not welcome it.
THE PATTERN
A refused message can still leave a witness through which its presence becomes known.
And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them.So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.THE THREAD
But the house of Israel will not hearken unto thee; for they will not hearken unto me: for all the house of Israel are impudent and hardhearted. The same Hebrew root שמע (shama, “hear and respond”) underlies “hear” here and “hearken” there. The companion verse reveals what the refusal touches: the message is not separable from the one who sends it.
