This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The Hebrew word translated “served” also means “labored,” so Jacob’s “all my power” names strength spent in another person’s work.

This verse makes the cost of service visible: Jacob puts his whole strength into work for another. The people he addresses know that cost; his labor is not an unseen claim. Full-hearted service can be real even when it is not met with fair treatment.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Giving someone all your strength does not guarantee that they will treat you fairly.

עָבַדְתִּי

avadti

GROWS FROM

עבד

ʿ-b-d

To work, labor, or serve.

The same root names both the act of service and the worker who serves, so “served” carries the reality of labor, not only a posture toward another. Beside “all my power,” it shows service as strength spent.

ALSO GROWS

eved: servant, worker

עֶבֶד

The worker and the act of serving grow from the same root.

avodah: work, labor, service

עֲבֹדָה

This branch makes explicit the labor contained in Jacob’s service.

יְדַעְתֶּן

yeda’ten

GROWS FROM

ידע

y-d-ʿ

To know, perceive, or recognize.

“know” in this verse is yeda’ten. The root connects knowing with recognition, not merely hearing a claim. The verse presents the daughters’ knowledge as recognition of the labor Jacob names.

ALSO GROWS

yodea: one who knows

יֹדֵעַ

This form names the person who recognizes or perceives.

da’at: knowledge, understanding

דַּעַת

The related noun shows knowing as something that can be held as understanding.

Service is strength put to work, and its conditions shape what that labor means.

And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.
Exodus 1:14 · KJVService here is labor imposed with rigor, exposing the cost carried by the people who serve.
And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.
Exodus 3:12 · KJVThe same Hebrew root for serving now names labor directed toward God after release from bondage.
For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
Galatians 5:13 · KJVService can also take the form of freely given care, shaped here by love.
And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.
Genesis 29:20 · KJV

The same root ⁨עבד⁩ (avad, to work or serve) names Jacob’s labor in both verses. There, love makes the years seem brief; here, he names the full strength his service costs, showing how the surrounding conditions shape the experience of the same work.
