What Does Genesis 9:23 Mean in the King James?
And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father’s nakedness.

THE KEY
The covering is complete only when the brothers turn their gaze away: protection includes what they refuse to look at.
THE MEANING
The scene holds two acts together: the brothers cover their father’s exposed body and turn their faces away. Care here includes not making another’s vulnerability an object of sight; both the cloth and the direction of their gaze preserve a boundary.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that once someone is exposed, their vulnerability is available for inspection.
THE ROOT
אֲחֹרַנִּית
ʾaḥoranît
GROWS FROM
אחר
אַחַר (ʾaḥar) means after, behind, or later.
אֲחֹרַנִּית appears twice: their bodies go backward, and their faces remain turned backward. The אחר family carries both “behind” in space and “after” in sequence, so the brothers protect their father by covering him without turning his exposure into something to see.
ALSO GROWS
ʾaḥar: After; behind.
אַחַר
This closely related form makes the spatial sense of the brothers’ backward movement audible in the word family.
ʾaḥarît: The latter part, end, or outcome.
אַחֲרִית
It carries the sense of what comes after, showing how the same root family also describes sequence and what lies ahead in time.
ʾaḥarôn: Last; latter.
אַחֲרוֹן
This branch names what comes after or behind, reinforcing the root’s movement between spatial and temporal meanings.
THE PATTERN
Care can preserve another’s dignity by covering exposure and withholding the gaze.
Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.THE THREAD
Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.The Hebrew word for “behind” in this verse belongs to the same אחר root family as “backward” in Genesis. There, turning backward protects another from the gaze; here, the speaker is held from behind and before, and the same directional language opens into a sense of being encompassed.
