This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The Hebrew calls the raiders’ three bands “three heads,” then leaves one voice alone to report what those divisions have done.

When loss reaches you, it can come in waves, each report adding a fresh wound to what you already know. Here, the taking of the camels and the killing of the servants remain in full view, while one survivor alone bears the news.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Surviving does not mean you escaped untouched: the lone survivor carries the report of the slaughter.

GROWS FROM

רֹאשׁ

⁨רֹאשׁ⁩ (rōʾš) means “head”; it also refers to a chief or the top or first part of something.

The phrase behind “three bands” is literally “three heads.” The word gives the raiding force an image of three divisions, and the English “bands” leaves that head-shaped arrangement hidden.

ALSO GROWS

rōʾš: Head; chief.

רֹאשׁ

The verse’s “three heads” uses the same word that can name a head or leader.

rēʾšît: Beginning; first part.

רֵאשִׁית

The beginning is the “head” of what follows, extending the root’s sense of what stands at the front.

What happens beyond a hearer’s sight reaches them through a witness who speaks the report.

And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.
1 Samuel 4:17 · KJVOne messenger carries a report that gathers battle, death, and loss into words the hearer must receive.
And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.
2 Samuel 1:4 · KJVA surviving witness names who has fallen and makes the distant violence present to the one listening.
And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.
Luke 24:23 · KJVThe women’s spoken report carries what they have witnessed to those who did not see it themselves.
And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.
1 Samuel 11:11 · KJV

The Hebrew phrase translated “three companies” also uses ⁨רָאשִׁים⁩ (rāʾšîm), “heads,” as Job does for the three bands. In Job the divided force brings seizure and slaughter; here, divisions shape a counterattack.
