What Does John 12:50 Mean in the King James?
And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The command is the life of the ages taking voice in the Son’s speech.
THE MEANING
The Father’s command is life of the ages itself. What Jesus speaks now is exactly what the Father has said, so this life is present in the words he speaks.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that the command is merely a rule pointing toward life later. Here, the command itself is life of the ages, spoken through the Son.
THE ROOT
αἰώνιος
aiōnios
GROWS FROM
αἰών
aiōn
An age, era, or span of a world-order
The word rendered “everlasting” carries the language of αἰών, an age. The commandment is identified with life of the ages, and the final clause shows that life moving from the Father’s saying into the Son’s speech.
ALSO GROWS
aiōn: An age or era
αἰών
This is the noun behind αἰώνιος; it lets “life everlasting” be heard as life of the ages.
aiōnes: Ages; the plural of αἰών
αἰῶνες
The plural makes the age-language explicit, revealing the time-world carried within the word “everlasting.”
ζωή
zōē
GROWS FROM
ζάω
zaō
To live, to be alive
The verse names the Father’s command as life itself. Then it shows that life as something spoken: what the Father says is voiced by the Son.
ALSO GROWS
zaō: To live, to be alive
ζάω
The verb is the living action carried by ζωή; the verse presents the command as life, not merely words about life.
zōopoieō: To make alive, give life
ζωοποιέω
This related word makes the living force of the word-family visible: life is something that can be given and made active.
THE PATTERN
Life is carried in the words that come from God and reach the reader now.
That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them. This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.THE THREAD
Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.“Eternal life” here uses the same Greek words as “life everlasting” in John 12:50: ζωή (zōē, “life”) and αἰώνιος (aiōnios, “of the age or ages”). Peter calls Jesus’ words the words of life of the ages, the life the Father gives the Son to speak.
