This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

A promise can belong to you before it has been divided into the share you can inhabit.

You can belong to a promise while part of your life still has no distinct, lived share in it. The seven tribes remain within Israel even as the distribution of their inheritance is unfinished; the verse holds belonging and incompletion together.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The false belief is that an unreceived portion means you have been excluded from the inheritance. Here, belonging remains true while the portion is still unassigned.

חָלְקוּ

ḥāleqû

GROWS FROM

חלק

ḥ-l-q

To divide, apportion, or share out.

The KJV’s “received” holds the gift side; the Hebrew wording also lets you see that the tribes had not yet divided their inheritance. The root links apportioning to a ḥēleq (⁨חֵלֶק⁩), a portion or share, so a shared promise becomes concrete through distinct shares.

ALSO GROWS

ḥēleq: Portion, share.

חֵלֶק

The action of dividing and the resulting share belong to the same root: apportioning gives each tribe a portion.

ḥelqāh: Parcel or plot of land.

חֶלְקָה

This branch makes the division tangible: a portion can be a specific parcel of ground.

נַחֲלָתָם

naḥălātām

GROWS FROM

נחל

n-ḥ-l

To inherit or possess; to hold as an allotted possession.

The word for inheritance grows from a root that also means to inherit or possess. Its branches keep inheritance concrete: something held and allotted, not merely a future idea.

ALSO GROWS

nāḥal: To inherit or possess.

נָחַל

The verb names the act that makes an inheritance a possession.

naḥălāh: Inheritance, allotted possession.

נַחֲלָה

The noun names what is inherited as a share that can be held.

וַיִּוָּתְרוּ

wayyiwwāterû

GROWS FROM

יתר

y-t-r

To remain, be left over, or exceed.

The verb for “remained” comes from a root that can mean what is left over or in excess. The seven are still named within the people while their inheritance remains undivided: present, but not yet apportioned.

ALSO GROWS

yether: Remainder, what is left over; surplus.

יֶתֶר

This branch echoes the verse’s image of tribes still remaining within the whole.

yitrôn: Surplus, gain, advantage.

יִתְרוֹן

Its sense of what remains beyond a measure deepens the word “remained” without making the tribes outsiders.

An inheritance becomes concrete when a shared gift takes the shape of a portion.

Unto these the land shall be divided for an inheritance according to the number of names.
Numbers 26:53 · KJVThe inheritance takes shape as land apportioned into shares.
The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.
Psalm 16:5 · KJVInheritance and portion name one held share, and the LORD sustains it.
And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
Acts 20:32 · KJVThe inheritance is shared among a people being built up by favor.
Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance unto the nine tribes, and the half tribe of Manasseh,
Joshua 13:7 · KJV

This verse places dividing and inheritance together as one movement. Joshua 18:2 names what is still unfinished; Joshua 13:7 shows the inheritance becoming concrete through apportionment.
