What Does Luke 14:31 Mean in the King James?
Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The king’s first move is not attack but deliberation: he measures the force he has against the force coming toward him.
THE MEANING
This verse places you in the pause before a costly conflict, where your actual capacity meets the scale of what is coming. Ten thousand against twenty thousand makes the imbalance plain; determination alone does not erase it. The decision takes shape through an honest reckoning before commitment.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It dissolves the belief that resolve alone makes a mismatched contest winnable; the difference in strength remains part of the decision.
THE ROOT
βουλεύσεται
bouleusetai
GROWS FROM
βουλ-
boul-
To deliberate, take counsel, or form a decision.
“consulteth” in this verse is bouleusetai. The Greek word names considered deliberation before action, not a reflexive charge into battle. Its family also names counsel and a council member, joining the act of deciding with the counsel through which a plan takes shape.
ALSO GROWS
boulē: counsel, plan, or purpose
βουλή
The king’s weighing of the odds belongs to the same word family as a formed plan or counsel.
bouleutēs: council member or adviser
βουλευτής
This branch carries the same family into a person associated with deliberation and counsel.
THE PATTERN
A costly undertaking calls for an honest reckoning and wise counsel before commitment.
For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety.THE THREAD
For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?The repeated act of sitting down first ties building to battle: each undertaking is weighed before its cost is committed. The king’s question becomes the second instance of the same reckoning, whether what is available can meet what lies ahead.
