What Does Mark 13:36 Mean in the King James?
Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The arrival does not create your condition; it reveals it by finding you as you are.
THE MEANING
The possibility remains that a coming arrives suddenly and finds you asleep. The arrival reveals the condition already present. The verse leaves that possibility stark: you may be found sleeping.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that a delayed arrival makes your present state irrelevant: the coming may be sudden, and you may be found as you are.
THE ROOT
εὕρῃ
heurē
GROWS FROM
εὑρ
heur
To find or discover.
“find” in this verse is heurē. The Greek word family gathers finding and discovery around the same root. The sudden arrival discovers you in the state already present; it does not create that state.
ALSO GROWS
heurēma: A thing found; a discovery.
εὕρημα
The person found sleeping is encountered in a condition already there.
heuresis: Finding; discovery.
εὕρεσις
This branch echoes the verse’s image of an arrival that uncovers a person’s present state.
THE PATTERN
An arrival reveals the state in which a person is found.
Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.THE THREAD
Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.Matthew uses the same Greek verb for “find” in a similar scene of a coming arrival. Here the arrival finds someone sleeping; there it finds a servant at work, the root holds both discoveries together.
