This verse in the King James

King James wording
Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.

The arrival does not create your condition; it reveals it by finding you as you are.

The possibility remains that a coming arrives suddenly and finds you asleep. The arrival reveals the condition already present. The verse leaves that possibility stark: you may be found sleeping.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that a delayed arrival makes your present state irrelevant: the coming may be sudden, and you may be found as you are.

εὕρῃ

heurē

GROWS FROM

εὑρ

heur

To find or discover.

“find” in this verse is heurē. The Greek word family gathers finding and discovery around the same root. The sudden arrival discovers you in the state already present; it does not create that state.

ALSO GROWS

heurēma: A thing found; a discovery.

εὕρημα

The person found sleeping is encountered in a condition already there.

heuresis: Finding; discovery.

εὕρεσις

This branch echoes the verse’s image of an arrival that uncovers a person’s present state.

An arrival reveals the state in which a person is found.

Flourishing is that servant whom his master finds doing this when he comes.
Matthew 24:46 · SDVThe arriving lord finds the servant already engaged in his work.
Therefore let us not sleep as the rest do, but let us stay awake and be sober.
1 Thessalonians 5:6 · SDVSleep and watchfulness name contrasting states that are present before the moment arrives.
Behold, I come as a thief. Flourishing is the one who stays awake and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.
Revelation 16:15 · SDVThe sudden coming exposes whether a person is watchful and prepared.
Flourishing is that servant whom his master finds doing this when he comes.
Matthew 24:46 · SDV

Matthew uses the same Greek verb for “find” in a similar scene of a coming arrival. Here the arrival finds someone sleeping; there it finds a servant at work, the root holds both discoveries together.
