This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The question of who may speak for God is itself heard by God, but hearing does not yet mean endorsement.

A claim to speak for God is still a human utterance, and it remains within the LORD’s hearing. Being heard does not, in this verse, mean being affirmed; the claim itself does not settle its authority.

וַיִּשְׁמַע

vayyishma

GROWS FROM

שמע

Hear, listen, heed.

“heard” in this verse is vayyishma. The verse ends by saying the LORD hears the speakers’ words. The root can describe hearing that opens into heed or response, but here it establishes that their claim reaches the LORD without saying that he endorses it.

ALSO GROWS

shema: Hear; heed and respond.

שְׁמַע

This branch shows how hearing can open toward response, while this verse states only that the LORD hears.

shemuah: A report, news, or something heard.

שְׁמוּעָה

The speakers’ words become a report received by the LORD; their claim is not left outside his hearing.

דִּבֶּר

dibber

GROWS FROM

דבר

Speak, utter words.

“spoken” in this verse is dibber. The same root describes the LORD speaking through Moses and the speakers’ claim that he also speaks through them. The repeated word holds both claims in view, while the verse leaves their authority unresolved.

ALSO GROWS

davar: A word, matter, or thing.

דָּבָר

The root links speaking with a word or matter: their claim is itself something said and heard.

medabber: One who speaks; a speaker.

מְדַבֵּר

The speakers’ question concerns who speaks, and this branch keeps attention on the person speaking as well as the words spoken.

Human speech remains within the LORD’s hearing, even when it concerns who may speak for him.

For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.
Psalm 139:4 · KJVThe speaker’s words are already known to the LORD, even before they are fully spoken.
But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
Matthew 12:36 · KJVSpeech remains answerable; words spoken by people are not beyond the reach of divine attention.
And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.
Numbers 12:6 · KJV

The same ⁨דבר⁩ (d-b-r) root links their claim that the LORD has spoken through them to the LORD’s description of how he speaks through vision or dream. The shared verb opens a distinction between speech itself and the mode in which it is received.
