What Does Ruth 1:17 Mean in the King James?
Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.

THE KEY
The Hebrew names death as the one force that could separate Ruth and Naomi, making every other change smaller than their bond.
THE MEANING
The vow holds their shared path through dying and burial, naming death as the only boundary that could part them. Their bond reaches beyond a shared home or future into the place where Ruth will be buried.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that a change of place or household is enough to end a bond.
THE ROOT
יַפְרִיד
yaphrid
GROWS FROM
פרד
p-r-d
To separate or divide apart.
The verb behind “part” is from parad, a root that can describe separation into distinct courses. Here, death is named as the force that could divide Ruth from Naomi; the oath places every lesser separation outside that boundary.
ALSO GROWS
yippared: Be parted or divided.
יִפָּרֵד
In Genesis 2:10, the river is parted into four heads. The same root can describe distinct paths, bringing out the force of Ruth’s vow that her path remains with Naomi.
vayipparedu: They separated from one another.
וַיִּפָּרְדוּ
Genesis 13:11 uses this form for Lot and Abram’s separation. Ruth’s vow invokes the same root while naming death as the only force that could separate her from Naomi.
THE PATTERN
Scripture portrays love as a bond that faces death and resists the forces that would sever it.
Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame.Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.THE THREAD
Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.Genesis 13:11 uses the same root, פרד (parad), for Lot and Abram’s separation. There it names a parting between kin; Ruth’s vow names death as the only force that could bring that division between her and Naomi.
