This verse in the King James

King James wording
He hath cut off in his fierce anger all the horn of Israel: he hath drawn back his right hand from before the enemy, and he burned against Jacob like a flaming fire, which devoureth round about.

Divine anger is pictured as protection itself being undone: Israel’s strength is hewn down, the defending hand turns back, and fire spreads around Jacob.

The verse speaks now in images of strength cut down, defense withdrawn from before the enemy, and anger burning through Jacob like fire that consumes everything around it. It holds the devastation without cushioning it: the horn is severed, the hand is pulled back, and destruction spreads.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that strength or divine protection is permanent: the horn is cut down and the defending hand is withdrawn.

גָּדַע

gādaʿ

GROWS FROM

גדע

to cut down, hew off, sever

“hacks down” in this verse is gādaʿ. The verb is forceful: Israel’s horn is hewn away, not merely diminished. The same root can name the act of cutting down and the state of being cut down, making the loss an act of violence rather than a change of fortune.

ALSO GROWS

gediʿah: cutting off, felling

גְּדִיעָה

This noun carries the same root consonants and makes the severing itself visible as an act.

nigdaʿ: was cut down, was severed

נִגְדַּע

This passive form shares the root and shows the cut from the side of what suffers it.

קֶרֶן

qeren

GROWS FROM

קרן

horn; something projecting or rising outward

The ⁨קרן⁩ family also names rays or shining, so a horn carries the image of strength that projects outward and can be seen. Israel (⁨יִשְׂרָאֵל⁩, Yisraʾel, “one who wrestles with God”) is the named people whose outward strength this image says is cut down.

ALSO GROWS

qāran: to shine, send out rays

קָרַן

This verb shares the root consonants and connects the horn’s projection with rays extending outward.

qarnayim: horns

קַרְנַיִם

This plural form preserves the root and extends the image of strength that rises or projects.

יַעֲקֹב

Yaʿaqov

GROWS FROM

עקב

heel; to follow at the heel or grasp the heel

Jacob’s name is linked to the heel he grasps at birth and carries the association of the heel-holder or supplanter. Here Jacob is surrounded by fire, so the name itself offers no shelter from the devastation the verse describes.

ALSO GROWS

ʿaqev: heel

עָקֵב

This noun shares the root consonants and is the image linked to Jacob’s name.

ʿaqav: to follow at the heel, grasp the heel, or supplant

עָקַב

This verb shares the same consonants and carries the action associated with the name Jacob.

Scripture depicts divine judgment as a consuming force that can cut down visible strength and leave no shelter around it.

All the horns of the wicked I cut off; but the horns of the aligned one are lifted high.
Psalm 75:10 · SDVThe horn is again the image of strength that can be cut down, while the verse also names its raising as a reversal.
For a fire is kindled in my nostrils, and it burns down to the lowest Sheol; it eats the earth with her yield, and sets ablaze the foundations of the mountains.
Deuteronomy 32:22 · SDVAnger appears as fire that consumes across the whole reach of its surroundings.
For our God is a fire that devours.
Hebrews 12:29 · SDVThe same image of divine presence as consuming fire appears in the New Testament.
All the horns of the wicked I cut off; but the horns of the aligned one are lifted high.
Psalm 75:10 · SDV

Psalm 75:10 uses both ⁨קֶרֶן⁩ (qeren, “horn”) and the same root ⁨גדע⁩ (gadaʿ, “cut off”) found in Lamentations 2:3. The matched words reveal the horn as strength subject to being hewn down; Psalm’s contrast between cut-down and exalted horns opens a reversal that this line of Lamentations leaves unstated.
