This verse in the King James

King James wording
Thou hast heard their reproach, O LORD, and all their imaginations against me;

Even the thought not yet spoken stands within God’s hearing: the verse places every design against you beside the reproach already voiced.

When reproach is directed at you, the LORD hears the words and the designs forming behind them. Nothing in the opposition is hidden from that hearing; the verse names inward plans alongside spoken insult.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that a plan against you is unseen until it happens is undone here: the LORD already hears the thought and the reproach.

מַחְשְׁבֹתָם

maḥshevotam

GROWS FROM

חשב

To think, reckon, devise, or plan.

The word rendered “imaginations” belongs to a family that names formed thoughts and designs, not merely passing fantasy. The verse places those inward plans beside spoken reproach, so what is being worked out in thought stands within God’s hearing too.

ALSO GROWS

ḥāshav: To think, reckon, or devise.

חָשַׁב

The same verb can describe both forming a plan and reckoning something, linking thought with what is weighed or counted.

maḥashavah: A thought, plan, or design.

מַחֲשָׁבָה

This noun names a formed intention; the plural in the verse describes the adversaries’ designs.

neḥshav: To be counted, considered, or regarded.

נֶחְשַׁב

This form preserves the root’s sense of something being mentally reckoned, widening the family beyond private thought.

שָׁמַעְתָּ

shamaʿta

GROWS FROM

שמע

To hear, listen, or attend.

“heard” in this verse is shamaʿta. The opening verb makes the LORD a witness to the reproach and the plans named beside it. The Hebrew root can carry attentive listening; this clause holds the hostility within that hearing.

ALSO GROWS

shamaʿ: To hear or listen.

שָׁמַע

This is the verb’s basic sense in the verse: the LORD hears the speaker’s report.

shemuʿah: A report or thing heard.

שְׁמוּעָה

This noun from the same root shows how hearing also receives what is being reported.

חֶרְפָּתָם

ḥerpātam

GROWS FROM

חרף

To reproach, taunt, or defy.

“reproach” in this verse is ḥerpātam. The word names more than neutral criticism: it carries the force of taunting or defying. Set beside the adversaries’ plans, it shows hostility both in what they say and what they devise.

ALSO GROWS

ḥāraph: To reproach, taunt, or defy.

חָרַף

The verb gives the force behind the noun in the verse: an act of open hostility.

ḥerpāh: Reproach or disgrace.

חֶרְפָּה

This noun names the shame carried by the taunt that the speaker brings before the LORD.

What is spoken in reproach and what is held in thought both remain open to God’s knowing.

The LORD perceives the thoughts of humankind, that they are vapor.
Psalm 94:11 · SDVThe verse places human thoughts within the LORD’s knowledge, even when they remain unspoken.
You perceive my sitting and my rising, and from afar you separate out my thought.
Psalm 139:2 · SDVEven a thought still far from speech is known to God.
And no creation is hidden before him, but all things are naked and bared at the throat to the eyes of him to whom our account belongs.
Hebrews 4:13 · SDVThe verse describes nothing as concealed from God’s sight.
For I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD, plans of wholeness and not of harm, to give you a future and a cord to hold.
Jeremiah 29:11 · SDV

Jeremiah uses the same root, ⁨חשב⁩ (ḥashav, think or plan), for the LORD’s thoughts toward you. The root names formed intention in both verses; its direction and source give those plans their character.
