This verse in the King James

King James wording
And there went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD.

The fire from the LORD’s presence does not merely strike Nadab and Abihu, the Hebrew says it eats them.

The verse shows fire coming from the LORD’s presence and consuming Nadab and Abihu; it states their deaths plainly, without softening the violence. The repeated words “before the LORD” place both the fire’s source and their deaths within that same presence. The verse holds open the terrifying possibility that divine presence is not experienced only as shelter.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that being before the LORD guarantees safety: they die in that very presence.

וַתֹּאכַל

wattokhal

GROWS FROM

אכל

ʾ-k-l

Eat, consume, devour.

“ate” in this verse is wattokhal. The verb literally presents the fire as eating them. English “devoured” carries that force, while the Hebrew root also joins this destruction to the ordinary language of eating and food.

ALSO GROWS

maʾakhal: Food

מַאֲכָל

The same root names what is eaten, making the fire’s consumption of the men disturbingly concrete.

heʾekhil: Feed, cause to eat

הֶאֱכִיל

This causative branch echoes the verse’s image of fire acting as the eater.

מִלִּפְנֵי

milliphnê

GROWS FROM

פנה

p-n-h

Turn toward, face.

“from before / before” in this verse is milliphnê. The phrase translated “before the LORD” appears for both the fire’s origin and the men’s deaths. The face-language of presence holds those two moments together: the fire comes from that presence, and they die within it.

ALSO GROWS

panim: Face, presence

פָּנִים

It reveals the presence beneath the repeated English “before.”

lifnei: Before, in the presence of

לִפְנֵי

This is the form used for the men’s deaths, repeating the language that introduced the fire.

Scripture repeatedly portrays fire from or belonging to the LORD’s presence as consuming.

And a fire came out from before the LORD, and ate upon the altar the rising offering and the fat; and when all the people saw it, they shouted, and fell on their faces.
Leviticus 9:24 · SDVFire comes from before the LORD and consumes an offering, echoing the source and action in this verse.
For the LORD your God is a fire that eats, a jealous God.
Deuteronomy 4:24 · SDVThe LORD is named as a consuming fire, making the image an expression of divine nature as well as an event.
For our God is a fire that devours.
Hebrews 12:29 · SDVThe same image appears again: God’s presence is described through fire that consumes.
And a fire came out from before the LORD, and ate upon the altar the rising offering and the fat; and when all the people saw it, they shouted, and fell on their faces.
Leviticus 9:24 · SDV

The fire consumes the offering here with the same Hebrew root ⁨אכל⁩ (ʾ-k-l, akal; eat, consume) used when it consumes Nadab and Abihu. The repeated language makes the shift from altar offering to human lives stark.
