This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the priest shall go forth out of the camp; and the priest shall look, and, behold, if the plague of leprosy be healed in the leper;

Healing is already present; the priest crosses the boundary to witness it.

The priest goes beyond the camp and sees that the affliction has healed in the person. Restoration is visible before the person returns inside, and recognition begins with seeing what is present now. The verse loosens the belief that an old affliction permanently defines a person’s status.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A past condition is permanent and defines what others can see.

נִרְפָּא

nirpāʾ

GROWS FROM

רפא

to heal, restore health

“healed” in this verse is nirpāʾ. The priest does not perform the healing here; he looks to see whether it is present. The same root names the healer and healing itself, holding the one who heals, the act, and the restored condition together.

ALSO GROWS

rōphēʾ: healer, one who heals

רֹפֵא

This branch names the agent whose work is visible in the healed person.

refuʾāh: healing, health

רְפוּאָה

This branch names the restored condition the priest goes out to examine.

וְרָאָה

wə-rāʾāh

GROWS FROM

ראה

to see, look, perceive

“look” in this verse is wə-rāʾāh. The priest’s role is expressed through seeing: restoration is discerned in the person’s present condition. This root also forms words for appearance and for a seer, linking the act of looking with what can be seen.

ALSO GROWS

marʾeh: appearance, sight

מַרְאֶה

The visible appearance is what the priest examines.

roʾeh: seer, one who sees

רֹאֶה

This branch echoes the priest’s role as the one who witnesses the change.

Restoration becomes publicly visible through a changed condition and a witness to it.

Then he went down and immersed himself seven times in Jordan, according to the word of the man of God. And his flesh returned like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.
2 Kings 5:14 · SDVNaaman’s flesh visibly changes and he is clean, making restoration something that can be seen.
And when he saw them, he said to them, Go, present yourselves to the priests. And it came to pass, that as they went, they were cleansed.
Luke 17:14 · SDVThe afflicted people become clean as they go toward the priests who will witness their restored state.
And he said to him, "Look, say nothing to anyone. But go your way, show yourself to the priest, and bring near for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a witness to them."
Mark 1:44 · SDVThe healed man is directed to show himself to a priest, where restoration receives public recognition.
Who releases all your crookedness; who heals all your sicknesses.
Psalm 103:3 · SDV

Psalm 103:3 uses the same ⁨רפא⁩ root in ⁨הָרֹפֵא⁩ (hārōphēʾ, “the one who heals”) that appears in Leviticus 14:3 as ⁨נִרְפָּא⁩ (nirpāʾ, “has been healed”). It places healing beside the release of crookedness, joining bodily restoration and release in one line.
