This verse in the King James

King James wording
As for the living bird, he shall take it, and the cedar wood, and the scarlet, and the hyssop, and shall dip them and the living bird in the blood of the bird that was killed over the running water:

The Hebrew names both the living bird and the water as living, placing one life-root beside the blood of what has died.

The living bird is dipped into the blood of the bird that was killed, together with cedar, scarlet, and hyssop, over waters described in Hebrew as living. Life stands in direct contact with blood and death, while the waters carry the same language of life. The rite holds these together in a single cleansing act.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It unsettles the belief that cleansing requires the living to remain untouched by death: the living bird is dipped into the blood of the bird that was killed.

GROWS FROM

חיה

chayah

to live; be alive

The Hebrew calls the bird and the water living, using forms from ⁨חיה⁩ (chayah), “to live.” The water’s movement and its life-language meet here: life is present both in the bird that remains alive and in the waters beneath the rite.

ALSO GROWS

chayyim: Life; also the form used in ⁨מַיִם חַיִּים⁩ (mayim chayyim), “living waters.”

חַיִּים

The same life-language used for the bird also describes the water in which the rite takes place.

chayah: To live, be alive.

חָיָה

This verb is the seed meaning beneath the verse’s repeated description of life.

chayyah: A living creature or animal.

חַיָּה

The living bird is a creature marked by the same root that marks the water.

Life is pictured as moving in waters, reaching places and people through their flow.

And every living soul that swarms, wherever the rivers come, shall live. And there shall be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters shall come there. They shall be healed, and everything shall live wherever the river comes.
Ezekiel 47:9 · SDVWhere the river flows, living things and even waters associated with healing appear.
The one who leans his weight into me, as the writing has said, rivers of living waters will flow from his belly.
John 7:38 · SDVLiving water again moves outward as a flow that reaches beyond its source.
And he points out to me a clean river of the waters of life, bright as crystal, flowing out from the throne of God and of the Lamb.
Revelation 22:1 · SDVThe water of life proceeds as a river, making life’s source visible through its movement.
And the LORD God shaped the ground-being, Adam, from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and Adam became a living soul.
Genesis 2:7 · SDV

Genesis calls the human a living soul, using the same life-root that describes the bird and water in Leviticus. Here, the root links creaturely life with the waters surrounding the rite.
