King James wording
King James Version
And what saddle soever he rideth upon that hath the issue shall be unclean.THE KEY
Hebrew names the saddle from the same seed as “rides,” so the object carrying the rider is bound to the action, and shares the rider’s stated condition.
THE MEANING
The verse presents ritual uncleanness as reaching beyond the body to the saddle that carries it. The body and its carrier belong to one field of contact, rather than two sealed-off things.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that bodily status belongs only to the body; here, the thing carrying the body shares its ritual uncleanness.
THE ROOT
הַמֶּרְכָּב
ha-merkav
GROWS FROM
רכב
רכב (rakav): ride or mount.
The verse’s מֶרְכָּב (merkav, “saddle” or “riding gear”) and יִרְכַּב (yirkav, “he rides”) both grow from רכב. Rendered as separate nouns and verbs in English, they still belong to one Hebrew family: the saddle is the riding surface, so its inclusion in the rider’s ritual status is built into the verse’s image.
ALSO GROWS
yirkav: He rides; he mounts.
יִרְכַּב
This verb appears in the verse itself and shares the saddle’s root, binding the object to the rider’s action.
merkavah: Chariot; vehicle.
מֶרְכָּבָה
This riding vehicle grows from the same root, showing how the family names things made to carry a rider.
THE PATTERN
Contact is shown as a route through which bodily states or effects extend beyond a person.
Every lying place on which the one who flows lies is soiled, and every vessel on which he sits shall be soiled. Then Haggai said, If one who is unclean by a corpse touches any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean. And at once the spring of her blood dried up, and she knew in her body that she was healed of the scourge.THE THREAD
He lays the beams of his upper rooms in the waters; he makes the clouds his chariot; he walks upon the wings of the breath. The saddle word here and “chariot” there both grow from רכב (rakav), the Hebrew family of riding and carrying. The shared root extends the image from a saddle to the clouds as a carrier.
