This verse in the King James

King James wording
Therefore shall ye observe all my statutes, and all my judgments, and do them: I am the LORD.

To observe is to guard: the command is kept alive when it is carried into action.

What is set before you is guarded by being carried into action. Statutes and judgments enter your present life as practiced choices. “I am the LORD” grounds these words in the identity of the one speaking.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that recognizing what is right counts as keeping it; the verse holds guarding and doing together.

וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם

u-shemartem

GROWS FROM

שׁמר

sh-m-r

guard, watch over, keep

“guard” in this verse is u-shemartem. The word carries the force of guarding, not simply noticing. Its branches connect keeping with watchfulness and entrusted care, so the instruction remains in view until it takes shape in action.

ALSO GROWS

shomer: keeper, guard, or watchman

שֹׁמֵר

The same root makes observing an active watch over what has been entrusted.

mishmeret: charge, duty, or keeping

מִשְׁמֶרֶת

A charge is something held and kept; here, the statutes are guarded by being done.

חֻקֹּתַי

ḥuqqotay

GROWS FROM

חקק

ḥ-q-q

inscribe, engrave, prescribe

The word for statutes is linked to what is inscribed or set down. That image gives the instruction a shape that can be held and carried into practice.

ALSO GROWS

chaqaq: to inscribe or engrave

חָקַק

Its carved mark suggests an instruction made definite enough to be kept.

mechoqeq: lawgiver or one who decrees

מְחוֹקֵק

This branch links the inscribed statute to the one who sets it forth.

וַעֲשִׂיתֶם

va'asitem

GROWS FROM

עשׂה

ʿ-ś-h

do, make, bring about

“do” in this verse is va'asitem. The instruction does not remain at the level of recognition: this verb brings it into what is made and enacted. The verse binds guarded instruction to visible practice.

ALSO GROWS

ma'aseh: deed, work, or action

מַעֲשֶׂה

The same root names the action through which instruction takes lived form.

oseh: one who does or makes

עֹשֶׂה

This branch describes the person through the doing itself.

What is entrusted is kept through watchful care joined to action.

And the LORD God took Adam and set him down in the garden of Eden, to serve it and to guard it.
Genesis 2:15 · SDVThe garden is entrusted to care that both tends it and keeps watch over it.
You command us to guard your appointments with full force.
Psalm 119:4 · SDVKeeping the precepts is sustained attention to what has been entrusted.
But be makers of the word, and not hearers only, miscounting yourselves.
James 1:22 · SDVThe word becomes lived when hearing reaches into action.
Guard them therefore and do them, for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, who will hear all these statutes and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.
Deuteronomy 4:6 · SDV

Deuteronomy binds the same two movements, keep and do, and names them as wisdom. Leviticus shows that guarding instruction means carrying it into lived form.
