This verse in the King James

King James wording
And if thou bring an oblation of a meat offering baken in the oven, it shall be unleavened cakes of fine flour mingled with oil, or unleavened wafers anointed with oil.

In Hebrew, you bring near a “drawing-near”, the act and the offering share one root.

Here, nearness takes material form in fine flour and oil, prepared as unleavened cakes or wafers. The oil is either mixed through the cakes or spread over the wafers, giving the offering two forms of preparation.

קָרְבָּן

qorbān

GROWS FROM

ק־ר־ב

q-r-b

Approach; draw near.

“bring near” in this verse is qorbān. English separates the act and object into “bring” and “oblation,” but Hebrew repeats q-r-b: you taqriv, draw near, a qorban, a drawing-near offering. The offering’s name carries the action inside it: what is offered is itself an enacted approach.

ALSO GROWS

qārav: Draw near; approach.

קָרַב

This is the verb behind “bring” in the verse, so the action already carries the sense of approaching.

qorbān: Offering; that which is brought near.

קָרְבָּן

This is the offering named in the verse, joining the prepared gift to the act of approach.

qerev: Midst; inner part.

קֶרֶב

This related word gives the root’s language of nearness an inward dimension as well as a movement toward.

מְשֻׁחִים

GROWS FROM

מ־ש־ח

m-sh-ḥ

Smear; anoint with oil.

The wafers are described as meshuchim, anointed with oil, from the same root that forms mashiach, “the anointed one.” The shared root connects oil spread over the wafers with the language used for one marked by anointing.

ALSO GROWS

māšaḥ: Smear; anoint.

מָשַׁח

This is the action applied to the wafers: oil is spread over them.

māšîaḥ: The anointed one.

מָשִׁיחַ

The same root names one described by anointing, linking the concrete oil on the wafers to the language of the anointed one.

Approach takes form in what is brought near, and the same movement can name coming close to God.

Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them, If anyone of you brings near a drawing near to the LORD, you shall bring near your drawing near from the cattle, from the herd and from the flock.
Leviticus 1:2 · SDVThe offering and the act of bringing it near form one concrete expression of approach.
But for me, drawing near to God is good; I have set my shelter in the Lord LORD, to recount all your works.
Psalm 73:28 · SDVThe movement of drawing near becomes an expression of trust and closeness to God.
Let us draw near with a true heart in the fullness of trust, our hearts sprinkled from a burdened shared sight, and our bodies bathed in clean waters.
Hebrews 10:22 · SDVApproach is expressed as coming near with the whole person, inwardly and bodily.
Flourishing is the man you choose and bring near, to lodge in your courts. We will be filled with the goodness of your house, your set-apart temple.
Psalm 65:4 · SDV

“Causest to approach” uses the same ⁨ק־ר־ב⁩ root as the bringing and offering in Leviticus 2:4, revealing the offering as an enacted approach. Psalm 65:4 carries that movement into dwelling in God’s courts and being satisfied with the goodness of the house.
