This verse in the King James

King James wording
And he shall wave the sheaf before the LORD, to be accepted for you: on the morrow after the sabbath the priest shall wave it.

The Hebrew verse opens and closes with the same wave-root, joining the sheaf’s movement before the LORD with its being accepted for you.

Your first portion comes into view before the LORD through a motion of offering, and the verse links that presentation with acceptance for you. It happens on the day after Sabbath, at the threshold of the harvest. The sheaf stands before the LORD before the rest of the crop is used.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Acceptance does not have to wait until the whole harvest is gathered: the first sheaf is presented for you at the harvest’s threshold.

וְהֵנִיף

vehenif

GROWS FROM

נוף

To wave or move to and fro.

The verse uses this verb at both its opening and close, making the sheaf’s waving its frame. ⁨תְּנוּפָה⁩ (tenufah, wave offering) comes from this same root, so the offering is named through the movement that presents it.

ALSO GROWS

yenifennu: He shall wave it.

יְנִיפֶנּוּ

This closing form repeats the wave-root and action from the verse’s opening.

tenufah: Wave offering.

תְּנוּפָה

This noun from the same root names the presentation enacted by waving.

הַשַּׁבָּת

ha-shabbat

GROWS FROM

שבת

To cease or stop.

The sheaf is waved on the day after Sabbath, whose root carries the idea of ceasing. The timing places the harvest’s first presentation just after a day of rest.

ALSO GROWS

shavat: Cease or stop.

שָׁבַת

This verb shows the root sense carried by Sabbath.

shabbaton: Sabbath rest.

שַׁבָּתוֹן

This related form shares ⁨שבת⁩ and makes the connection to cessation explicit.

The first portion is brought before the LORD, and its status speaks for what follows.

And now, behold, I have brought the first-ripened fruit of the ground, which you, O LORD, have given me. And you set it down before the LORD your God, and bow down before the LORD your God.
Deuteronomy 26:10 · SDVThe firstfruits are set before the LORD as the opening portion of the land’s increase.
Give the LORD weight with your wealth, and with the first of all your yield.
Proverbs 3:9 · SDVThe firstfruits are named as the portion presented from all the increase.
And if the first portion is set apart, so is the lump. And if the root is set apart, so are the branches.
Romans 11:16 · SDVThe first portion’s status reaches beyond itself to the whole.
And Aaron shall wave the Levites before the LORD, a wave offering from the children of Israel, that they may serve the serving of the LORD.
Numbers 8:11 · SDV

Numbers 8:11 uses the same Hebrew wave-root for Aaron’s presentation of the Levites, though the KJV renders it “offer.” Here the movement presents the first sheaf; there, it presents people, revealing a shared act of bringing what is set apart before the LORD.
