This verse in the King James

King James wording
And if it be any unclean beast, of which they do not offer a sacrifice unto the LORD, then he shall present the beast before the priest:

What cannot be brought near as a sacrifice is still brought near to the priest.

The verse holds two statuses together: an unclean beast is not brought near as an offering to the LORD, yet it is made to stand before the priest. Exclusion from the altar does not erase it from sacred consideration; its place is still brought into view.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that what cannot be offered has no place in sacred order. Here, exclusion from sacrifice is distinct from being absent from the priest’s judgment.

יַקְרִיבוּ

yaqrivu

GROWS FROM

קרב

Approach; draw near.

“bring near” in this verse is yaqrivu. The verb “offer” and the noun “sacrifice” share the root of drawing near: the offering is what is brought near. The verse limits this kind of approach for the unclean beast, while leaving another kind of approach open.

ALSO GROWS

qorbān: Offering; that which is brought near.

קָרְבָּן

It names the sacrifice the beast is not brought near as.

qārōv: Near; close.

קָרוֹב

It keeps the root’s sense of nearness audible beneath the offering language.

וְהֶעֱמִיד

wehe'emid

GROWS FROM

עמד

Stand; remain; take one’s stand.

“stands the beast before” in this verse is wehe'emid. The Hebrew verb literally makes the beast stand before the priest. The animal is not brought near as an altar offering, yet it remains visible before a priestly decision.

ALSO GROWS

ʿammūd: Pillar; column.

עַמּוּד

A pillar is something that stands upright, echoing the root’s concrete sense.

maʿamad: Standing place; position.

מַעֲמָד

It evokes the place or position in which something stands, fitting the beast’s presentation before the priest.

Sacred approach is ordered: what can be offered and what cannot still receive a defined handling before God.

Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them, If anyone of you brings near a drawing near to the LORD, you shall bring near your drawing near from the cattle, from the herd and from the flock.
Leviticus 1:2 · SDVThe altar offering is described with the repeated language of drawing near, showing one appointed form of approach.
Everything that opens the womb in all flesh, which they bring near to the LORD, whether of man or of beast, shall be yours. Nevertheless, the firstborn of man you shall surely buy back, and the first-opened of unclean beasts you shall buy back.
Numbers 18:15 · SDVThe unclean firstling is not left unaccounted for; it is assigned redemption instead of altar sacrifice.
You also, as living stones, are built up into a house of breath, a set-apart priesthood, to carry up sacrifices of breath, well received by God through Jesus, the Anointed One.
1 Peter 2:5 · SDVThe priestly language continues, while the offering takes a different form: spiritual sacrifices.
Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them, If anyone of you brings near a drawing near to the LORD, you shall bring near your drawing near from the cattle, from the herd and from the flock.
Leviticus 1:2 · SDV

Here, the Hebrew root ⁨קרב⁩ (qarab), meaning “draw near,” appears in both the verb for bringing an offering and the word for the offering itself. Leviticus 27:11 turns from drawing the animal near as a sacrifice to making it stand before the priest, revealing two distinct destinations for approach.
