This verse in the King James

King James wording
Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres.

A tomb built for a murdered prophet can become the builders’ own testimony that they still consent to the murder.

The verse reads present remembrance by the alignment it carries: honoring those who were silenced does not by itself mean the silencing has ended. A memorial can tell the truth about the dead while the living still consent to the deed that killed them.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A memorial proves that the one who builds it has broken with the violence that made it necessary.

συνευδοκεῖτε

syneudokeite

GROWS FROM

⁨δοκ-⁩ (⁨δοκέω⁩)

Think or seem; with ⁨εὖ⁩, the compound ⁨εὐδοκέω⁩ means to think well of or approve. The prefix ⁨σύν⁩ adds “with” or “together.”

“take pleasure with” in this verse is syneudokeite. The word translated “allow” carries the force of joining in approval, not merely permitting something to happen. The verse says the tomb-builders’ actions bear witness that they share in their fathers’ deeds.

ALSO GROWS

eudokia: Good pleasure, approval

εὐδοκία

This branch names the pleasure taken in something, showing that approval is an inward alignment as well as an outward permission.

syneudokeō: Agree or approve together

συνευδοκέω

The added ⁨σύν⁩ means “with” or “together”; here, the approval joins the present builders to the deeds of their fathers.

μαρτυρεῖτε

martyreite

GROWS FROM

⁨μαρτυρ-⁩ (⁨μάρτυς⁩)

Witness or testify; give evidence.

“bear witness” in this verse is martyreite. The verse makes their building an act of testimony: their own hands provide evidence of the alignment Jesus names. The same witness language returns in Matthew, where they are witnesses against themselves.

ALSO GROWS

martyria: Testimony, witness

μαρτυρία

Testimony makes a claim visible and answerable; the builders’ actions testify to more than their stated reverence.

martyrion: Evidence, testimony

μαρτύριον

This branch emphasizes proof: the tombs stand as evidence of the relationship between remembrance and consent.

μνημεῖα

mnēmeia

GROWS FROM

⁨μνημ-⁩ (⁨μνήμη⁩)

Memory, remembrance.

“memorial tombs” in this verse is mnēmeia. The word for the tombs grows from the language of remembering: these are memorials as well as burial places. The verse asks what the builders’ remembrance reveals about their present alignment.

ALSO GROWS

mnēmē: Memory, remembrance

μνήμη

This root makes the tombs acts of remembrance, so their meaning is measured by the deeds they preserve.

mnēmeion: Memorial, tomb

μνημεῖον

The memorial holds the memory of the dead, while the verse makes the builders’ own actions part of that testimony.

A memorial to rejected truth can expose continuity with the very rejection it appears to mourn.

Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets called out, saying, Thus says the LORD of hosts, Turn now from your evil ways and from your evil doings, but they did not hear and respond, nor bend their ear to me, says the LORD.
Zechariah 1:4 · SDVThe refusal of prophetic speech appears as a pattern carried forward through the fathers.
So you bear witness to yourselves that you are children of those who murdered the prophets.
Matthew 23:31 · SDVTheir own actions testify to continuity with the line that killed the prophets.
Which of the prophets did your fathers not pursue? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Aligned One, of whom you have now become the handers over and the blood-spillers.
Acts 7:52 · SDVThe verse names the same pattern across generations: persecuting the messengers whose truth is being remembered.
So you bear witness to yourselves that you are children of those who murdered the prophets.
Matthew 23:31 · SDV

Matthew uses the same witness root as Luke: ⁨μαρτυρ-⁩ (martyr-), meaning witness or testify. In both verses, the builders’ relationship to the prophets becomes visible through their own actions.
