This verse in the King James

King James wording
Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing.

The elder son hears restoration before he understands it: the house’s joy reaches him as sound at the threshold.

You are still coming in from the field when the house reaches you as sound: music and dancing are already inside, before you know the reason. The verse holds you at the threshold, where celebration is heard before its meaning is known.

GROWS FROM

⁨φωνή⁩ (phōnē, sound or voice), joined with ⁨σύν⁩ (syn, together)

A sound brought together with other sound.

“harmony” in this verse is symphōnias. The word translated “musick” is ⁨συμφωνία⁩, the source of “symphony,” and carries the sense of sounding together. A related Greek verb can mean “agree”; here, the gathered sound lets the son encounter the household’s shared joy before he knows what has happened.

ALSO GROWS

symphōneō: Agree; sound together.

συμφωνέω

The related verb links the sound of many parts together with people coming into agreement, illuminating the music as a shared expression.

φωνή

This root makes the scene’s first encounter audible: the son hears what is happening inside before he sees it.

When wholeness returns, joy moves outward as sound others can share.

Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with a ringing cry. Then they said among the nations, The LORD has grown great in doing with these.
Psalm 126:2 · SDVRestoration fills the mouth with laughter and singing, making joy audible to others.
The LORD your God is within you, the mighty one; he will deliver; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will hush in his love; he will exult over you with a ringing cry.
Zephaniah 3:17 · SDVJoy over the one held close is expressed in singing.
I say to you, so there will be joy in the heavens over one who misses the mark and turns, more than over ninety and nine aligned ones who have no need of turning.
Luke 15:7 · SDVThe return of one who was lost becomes shared joy in heaven.
For this son of mine was dead, and is living again; he had lost his way, and is found." And they began to be glad.
Luke 15:24 · SDV

The preceding verse names why the music rises: the lost son has returned, and the household begins rejoicing. The elder son hears that restoration before anyone tells him its story.
